Sigh...Wonderin if my season is over before it begins...This might be a long one...
Took a spill on the highway yesterday, I'm o.k. more or less. Travelin on the FDR to Ft. Hamilton 05:15 a.m. and hit not exactly a pot hole, but a groove I guess, and lost the front end. Not sure how fast I was going I would estimate somewhere between 50 and 70 mph. Had just come out of a slight curve when I hit the hole and the bars just shook from out of my hands and I went flying off to the right of the bike. I guesstimate I slid about 20-30 feet, but the Bird slid about 75-100 I think. I was in uniform and had my gear on which saved me some skin. I escaped with about a dime sized hole in my right knee, which couldn't be stitched the doc said cause the skin was just burned away, best to just let it heal as is; a relatively small skid burn on my arse, right cheek, and a bruised or sprained pinky finger. Definately could have been a lot worse. The Bird suffered major rash to the right side fairing and front cowl, broken mirror, rash on the right side pipe, broken brake lever, about 1/2 in of the brake foot lever got cauterized, small scrape on front fender, and worst of all, whatever is hiding behind the fairing, holding the oil was ruptured as she was in a pool of oil when I got to her. After I finished sliding what seemed like an eternity (btw, safety gear works! and I discovered if you go down, ain't a damned thing you can do about it; can't stop, can't slow down, can't fight it. Just gotta go for the ride. I did manage to twist over mid-slide to check for incoming traffice behind me, thus the arse rash, but luckily, I was thrown to the right in the median lane), I got right up, took my helmet off (head never touched the ground), and walked in disbelief for what seemed like a quarter mile to the Bird. In my mind I'm thinkin "o.k., I'm just a little shook, I'll pick it up, get back on and continue. NOT. That's when I discovered the pool of oil beneath her. And funny how us New Yorkers are; three people stopped and got out to check on me, one asked if I was o.k., yes; if I had a phone, yes; then gave me a "fist five" and said he had to go. The next guy started telling me he could get me a tow-truck right away; I declined, said I'd call my insurance co., and the next guy said nothing, got back in his car and left. I was thankful though. Again, it could have been a lot worse. I called my ins. co. and she had me on hold for a long while trying to find a tow; it was 0530 in the morning after all, buy when she gets one, she says he'll tow me to Brooklyn, NY, waaaay outta my way so I declined. I was still a bit shaken I guess, but I thought I'd figure something out. Just then a tow truck shows up, from the co. she called, and I told him I didn't want to get towed to Brooklyn. He said he had me covered, and towed me to the bike shop in The Bronx, that I asked him to. ($88.00us for the tow). I sat and collected myself for about another 20 mins. then called a buddy to pick me up and take me to the hospital. Well, he actually took my to my car and I drove there. All of this after my first (relatively), long distance trip of 600 miles round trip to VA, second half in the wet, and partly at night last weekend. I am too outdone. I'm sure my trip to Myrtle Beach next month will have to be cancelled, not sure if I, or the Bird will be ready by then. Bummer. Pics to follow.

Ouch... you are one lucky guy, especially on the FDR. Sorry to hear about the Bird though. Hope both of you are back to 100% soon. |

You probably wont get anywhere but you should file a claim. My brother works for the court in westchester and hears claims like this all day, somtimes people actually win.

Not sure about the claim. Didn't file a police report; not sure how I wanna handle the insurance claim. If at all.

Sorry to hear about that. The roads are in bad shape over here as well and is always somthing to be concerned about. Hope you're back to normal soon and that the bike comes through as well.

Oh man, I am sooooo sorry to hear about this one.
I had followed your posts since you cut the deal on the bike and could so relate to your excitement about finally getting it, kept me going while I was enduring winter and building mine.
This just totally sucks!
Thankfully you came out relatively OK and I am so with you on how crucial having the right gear is.
I got taken out 2 years ago by a older gent who pulled a u-turn right in front of me on a local side street. Started to pull out of his parking spot, looked right down the road and I assumed - bad move - saw me, paused, now sure he saw me... then gunned it right into my path. No way to clear him, hit his Cavalier in the front wheel, then took the bumper off, I went right over the hood and landed 20 ft down the road. Had armoured jacket, boots gloves and jeans, heard only a faint ''tock'' as the back of my Shoei touched the road. Got up, had NOTHING. Found tiny bruise next day where ratchet was sitting in my right pocket (Duh. Tools now stay under seat...).
No one who watched could believe it, even the cops were amazed I had no marks when they saw the scene.
The best was my old 600 lbs warhorse VF1000R which, minus a few trim pieces and 1 peg, I was still able to ride home!!!!
The Cavy had to be towed away.
Heal those wounds, fix that birdy and get back out there!
And if it's of any use, I still have spare right side signal lens, yours if you need it...

Hate to hear things like this, glad you're OK man!! Glad to see "our" Power Trip jacket held up. The "thing" under the fairing that holds the oil is called the "oil cooler", looks like the windscreen got cracked too?? I've still got my stock one & you're more than welcome to it if you need it.
