I'm riding from El Paso to Sacramento for my spring break vacation. I'll be leaving this friday, 3/21 my birthday, and coming back next saturday.
A buddy of mine will be joining me from Phoenix to LA, and another friend will join us from LA to Sacramento, and another in San Luis Obispo. Should be a fun ride . We will ride the PCH, I've always wanted to ride it and now I finally will.
I just did an oil change this past sunday, checked coolant, brakes, clutch/brake fluids, new tires less than 1k miles on 'em; Polit Road in the rear and Pilot Power in the front. i'll be packing a few tools just in case something happens, but i'm sure the XX will do the trip no problem.
I will be using a zero-gravity touring windscreen, nelson rigg saddle bags and tail bag, and a little joe rocket tank bag. I have the vista-cruise so my throttle hand wont get tired. I also have Dave's lowering brackets. I use the stock bars but i have monkey arms so i'm good I've loaded plenty of music on my ipod so i dont get bored, and also have a mount for the ipod so i can change the song/volume while riding (i'll try not to get distracted).
The trip will be over 2500 miles total.
I cant wait!!! |

Enjoy it brother. I expect a killer trip report and photos when you safely return. At 20 you probably only have 4-5 spring breaks left.......

Enjoy mate.
At 20 a 2500 mile bike trip seems ... and is .... exciting.
But at 44, I'm not so sure the backside can stand the spanking anymore

Have a great ride! Your luggage looks good. I use the same exact tailbag (Nelson-Rigg CL150) on my daily commute to work.

Long trips are no problem for this 63 y.o. fat arse, especially on my G.F.L. However, it's my spring break and the weather is so/so. Can't ride anywhere b/c can't go through the mountains yet. A few trips 1/2 way to Whistler and slabbing it down the freeway and back. But, I have 1200kms since the riding season began, ie it stopped raining and warmed up a bit. Have a great trip.

Gabe, I can't help but notice one thing that bugs me about your route. Now I fully support your desire to get to the coast but super slabbin it on I-10 all the way there is just going to flat spot your tires and put you with more cagers, truckers, cops, less scenery, and generally be a bore. No doubt you can true them up on PCH.
Ride your ride man but if it were me...I'm just sayin here.....I'd be lookin for those "special roads" that let you know you're "on the road" not on the Interstate. The Interstate has no soul. You dont meet those special people on the interstate. You dont see the country you dont geet to eat that good/bad food that make trips more memorable.
Yep you end up riding farther and such but I consider myself pretty seasoned on the road and I avoid the interstate like an ugly chick. I doubt if you were going to ride the speed limit anyway (where it's safe of course)
Here is what I would look to do. Get off the 10 and hit 666 (who does not want a pic of thier buds and bikes next to that hwy sign).
Cut 60 over and go around Pheonix to the north (this is of course you and the hommies arent planning to brid dog the chickies in Tempe on your way through) hehehehe
Catch 93 out of Pheonix which is Joshua Tree Parkway....fookin beautiful. Swing down by 29palms where the Jar Heads who make it possible for us to ride in safety train and also I think part of that road was used the making of that biker classic Tourque! hehehehehe
Sure it's more miles but you get some twisties throughout and scenery and I put money day one will be more fun with more notable experiences than you'll get super slabbin I-10. 2 cents is all this is worth.

Mate,
I know that you have to get halfway across the country quickly, but the guys are right - way too much superslab. If you want a tip from soemone that doesn't even live in the US, turn off the 10 at Indio and take the 111 and 74 and then the 79 to Beaumont before rejoining the 10. My wife and I drove it 2 years ago and thought to myself, wow what a road! Wish I was on two wheels.
There are some pretty special roads to be found all over SoCal. Enjoy them all if you can!
Have a great trip.
