March 10 through the 15th my film production students will be shooting on California's Highway 1, also known as the Pacific Coast Highway, from San Simeon to San Francisco.
The content of the documentary is simply why we ride. If you're in the area and happen to spot our crew, please join us - we'd like to hear your story, especially as it pertains to brand or model culture.
Our caravan includes a white Expedition towing a white utility trailer, along with a BB, an HD Sporty, a Shadow, a Yamaha Warrior, a customized Yamaha cruiser and a Honda ST 1300.
Our insert bike is my '00 'Bird pictured below. It's ride and counter-balanced engineering make it the best platform to shoot from.

That looks like a cool project you have there. I've only seen pictures of that road but because of it's popularity you are bound to interview all sorts of riders. Will the finished product be confined to your classroom or will you post it on the internet?

Right on! Thats a fantastic looking rig. Makes me want to ride out from OK to get a look at the operation. As anyone who's met me can tell you though I'm not photogenic. I like the PCH S. of Big Sur and up by Leggett.
I'll buy a copy plus any and all bonus footage you put together.
Good luck with the operation!!!
I did it in 05 and it calls me back again!

Actually, I'd love to see what your students put together, are they high school or in a film school?

The students are involved in the Digital Film Production program at Dixie State College.

Segments, if not that entire show will find their way on web, no doubt. I'll give URLs when they're available.

good luck !!! | Bummer! Sorry to miss you. From EP you're probably doing a more southern route, but if you're passing through Southern Utah on I-15 give us a shout. We can tell you where to find real beer here.

That looks like serious trust in those suction cups. My sister in law and wife are both in video production. I know how much that stuff costs....
You do have equipment insurance, right?
Cool set up. I too would be interested in the finished product. Hey my sister in law is a producer & editor........

Cool set up. I too would be interested in the finished product. Hey my sister in law is a producer & editor........ | The larger suction cups are rated at 50 lbs of torque, the small ones at 35. Still makes me nervous though. That's why it's insured as well. The final rig includes safety lines. There are smaller applications as well when it comes to cameras - Motorcycle Cam, Motorcycle Camera, and Motorcycle+Cameras by Twenty20 - several of you on this site use them and they produce great shots. This will be shot at 24 frames progressive for a film look and to cut into other footage from a second unit so that's why we're using that specific camera.
Do you have a relative who distributes?

Awesome camera setup ! Beats the heck out of my little cam on a ram mount...
I drove down the PCH in the car, years ago. Amazing scenery, it would be great on the bike. Watch out for the CHP...
I would be definately interested in seeing the final product too.

What a great project...I'll have to ride down and meet up with you guys and ride for awhile. I commute into San Francisco every day on my 02 Silver BB from Pleasanton. Its only a short ride to highway 1 from the city. You may allready have plans for it, but Alice's is a big biker stop over in Woodside on 84 at 35, maybe a 10mile ride east from Highway 1. Let me know where you may be at on the 13,14 and 15th. I'm sure I can play hooky from work and cruise with you guys.

Four riders, four different bikes, 1757 miles from St. George, Utah to Point Bonita Lighthouse just North of San Francisco. We had five riders scheduled but one fell over twenty feet while rock climbing and collapsed both her ankles the day before we left. Ouch.
We picked up the PCH at Cambria and camped at San Simeon. We shot interviews, scenics and road-going shots, leap-frogging our camera crew up to Big Sur where we camped the next night. More of the same the following day though the road took us to more civilized digs in San Francisco.
I took my crew to ILM the next morning and spent the rest of the day shooting and riding in the Marin Headlands at Point Bonita.
We shot back Saturday, unfortunately missing a chance to hook up with Sandsquidxx. We got held up by snow and 40 mph winds at Tehachepi, extending our return by another day.
Most major catastrophes averted, though the director of the project lost the oil plug of the crankcase of his Yamaha V-Star Custom. He made do with an improvised rubber plug gauged with medical tape until he found a replacement part in the city.
While rigging my 'Bird with a rear camera mount at the Golden Gate Bridge, a crew member who was righting the bike to frame the shot in the mounted camera thought the kickstand was down. The 'Bird fell down hard cracking and gouging the LH beetlebag, shattering the upper fairing at the rear-view mirror, and scraping the stator cover and LH lower fairing. Seven years old and finally popped her cherry. GDATH. $700 in estimates, without paint. The camera was fine thanks to the mighty suction cups.
BUT, it was a good shoot and a great trip. As soon as I get a trailer from the student director I'll post the link.
The images below show a shot through the windscreen just outside of Paso Robles, me on my 'Bird with a side camera mount just north of San Simeon, the lineup at the Marin Headlands, Alexander Battery (the camera mounted on the rear of the 'Bird is covered), and the lineup at Pfiefer Nat'l Park at Big Sur.

Great pics, its a shame the bike got damaged. As soon as I get my pics converted to a smaller format I'll post them of my trip on Sunday after you left down to Alice's from San Fransisco.
