    Alpine Berzerk

    hey all!

I'm planning a route from Vienna to Nice, and I wanna go all Alpine BERZERK on the way down to the ocean.
I don't have so much fixed points yet, only that i have appointmenst in Salzburg and near Dornbirn.
Please, if you want, suggest Routes or comment on my plans

    1. from Vienna to Salzburg, buisness as usual for me:
    Mariazell-Wildalpen-Bad Aussee

    2. from Salzburg to the Bodensee:
    nothing crazy in Tyrol

    3. East-West through the beautiful (hopefully!) Switzerland, first Taste of the real alpine berzerkification:
    +pass +pass +pass +pass +pass +pass +pass +pass

    4. and then of course, the famous (drumroll please):
    Route des grandes Alpes!!

= and that's my niiiice way down to Nice. I think it's nice!

But, going back up again...I'm not really sure how to yet.
Its tempting for me to go on the coast a while (love the ocean), then head back north over the ol'Brennero, south again to eastern Tyrol, cross back to Salzburg (where I have a place to stay). Take it easy from there back to Vienna...

what you think? I'm really looking forward to the Switzerland-into-France part!!
but on the way up, I would appreaciate your help! I'm sure I missed a spot or two in the Dolomites

    cheers,
    Mikey

    Re: Alpine Berzerk

cruisin' along tha coast, west coast yo

    Genova-Parma-Garda-Brennero

After that, back to my place in Salzburg, like, totally through the Alps, like, you know what I'm sayin:
    going home part one

and then head back to Vienna with an: upperclass tyre beater

in the end, it would be ruffly 3618Km of twisty sensation
    I LIKE!

    cheers,
    Mikey

    Re: Alpine Berzerk

That's a great tour, I wish you lots of fun and great weather!!!

    Now back to reality... ;-)

It all looks nice on paper, but after having driven a lot of those roads, I can tell you the length vs. time is very wrong - you didn't specify:
    - are you going to always drive on the highways (as shown on the maps) - in that case, I wouldn't really call them 3618km of "twisty sensation", but rather 3618 boring km of expensive tolls
    - what's your schedule? is each link a day's worth? - in that case, some are overkill and impossible to do in one day (for example the passes in SW)

Also, I don't see anywhere in your link a path through the Dolomites - those are just next to Bozen, but you seem to be always be driving in Karinzia (Austrian side) than on the Italian side... [unless I am missing something]

Just trying to be helpful - I'll be happy to also discuss those in more details on Thursday, in our face2face ;-)

I'm waiting to get my Navi before I dig into the routes in higher detail. but I certainly was under the impression that:

    1. the Swiss-part is bulletproof...I got it from this site: Motorrad-Transitroute durch die Schweiz, Ost - West, von Lustenau (A) nach Chtel (F). Motorrad-Touren, Karten, Bilder, Berichte - Hermann Ryter, Steffisburg, Schweiz
    *

    2. Route des grandes Alpes D902 is beyond doubt.
Is it not? only thing I was worrying about is the cold weather on the peaks.

you mean my plans for going back up from Nice?
    that's the loosest part yet.
I think I will take the "Via Aurelia" to Genova or La Spezia, then head north to the Garda Lake.
I have to get back to Salzburg rather quickly at that point, so I would need a good Route if you know one

via the Salzkammergut? If you're around Adnet, and you like Schnitzel, you HAVE to check out the Gasthof Alpenrose.
    It's Schnitzel-heaven -guaranteed.

    Re: Alpine Berzerk

    hey all

just wanted to say that I'm back from my trip, and that it was a really, very, extremly *a w e s o m e* one!
I did it in four days (I'm not a slacker):

    1. Austria (Salzburg) to the Swiss Border, warmup ride
    2. cross the Swiss like planned (8 passes), really hitting it ala berzerk
    3. complete Routes des grandes Alpes (countless passes) to Castellane, berzerkmode + afterburner
    4. Castellane to Salzburg -rainy weather highway blaster

I sure froze my butt off, but not over the mountaintops, but on my way home in the rain. 18 Hours on the bike, mostly rainstorms -it was a strange experience, and more strangely: somehow it was fun

    Re: Alpine Berzerk

18h on the bike in a day? How many km did you actually ride (per day & total)? You might qualify for the Iron Butt tag...
