FI LIGHT, SPUTTERING AND DEAD

Details- had the bike since Apr 09- put 6000 miles on her no problems.

The FI light came on once when i first bought her.

Yesterday- taking the bike to get an oil change, its starts sputtering and died.

I thought i didnt shift to neutral and stopped in a gear.
Started it up and at the next stop sign. Sputtering and dead.
Started it up again and rode to the shop. Had the oil changed, mentioned what happend.
Well of course it didnt happen to him. No FI light or anything.
Rode home, doing about 80. Notice i need gas. Just as i am pulling into the station, starts bucking and sputtering and died. No FI LIGHT

Got gas. Rode home no problems. No FI LIGHT NO BUCKING OR SPUTTERING.

THIS morning- going to work - FI LIGHT comes on. And the bucking and sputtering started again.

What i noticed is the bucking and sputtering seems to happen in the lower RPMS, like when i am slowing down.

My plan of action is to get the FI light fix done. Anythingelse you guys can recommend?

I'm thinking this may be your solution. I had very similar symptoms on my 2000. An hour of my time with this guide and problem solved.

Re: FI LIGHT, SPUTTERING AND DEAD

i will have the stator checked. Since i dont have any tools.

From reading the post-
Ii hear something about using the R1 RECTIFIER.

Any recommendations on the stator if it needs replacing?

Do i use R1 RECTIFIER AND STATOR?

TO be honest, this is what i am thinking

Do the wiring loom fix
replace the stator, rectifier and battery.

Then hopefully that will solve my problem.

Go get, what every XX owner should have.....a 20$ volt/ohm meter.

With one of these, you can quickly trouble shoot most electrical problems in minutes.

Re: FI LIGHT, SPUTTERING AND DEAD

Here is the update:

The Loom fix was apparently done on my bike. The mechanic undid the wires and all and we determined, that while the person did a good job at the time (whenever that was), it wasnt working now.

Bottom line, we re-did, the fix. Had a old school guy do it and. 80.00 later, he calls and says its done.

he test rode the bike, the shop owner test rode it, i rode it. No FI light, no cutting off. seems more responsive.

And he says i shouldnt have that problem again.

We shall see. But i am back on the road.

Re: FI LIGHT, SPUTTERING AND DEAD

My "99's Fi has been on/off intermittently for about 2 weeks now. Today I took off the rear cowling and undertail to see about securing the ECU and PC3. The ECU was rattling around and the PC unit was velcro'd on top of the ECU. I cut foam to fit the ECU, mounted it underneath and secured the ECU with a strap. I then repositioned the PC in front of the tool kit and secured it with velcro. Test ride reveals no FI light and a very quick bird with no hesitation or cutting out.(which happened before the fix) I'll re-post now and then with updates or if the problem re-appears. Over the years I've always found that fixing the easy, obvious things first is the best bet. BTW my XX has yoshi, PC3, 44K, black paint.

Easy to find at harborfreighttools.com or at home depot, lowes, tru value, walmart, and nearly any other store that carries tools or oil. This one little item will save you headache, frustration, and loads of cash.
