I was told by my mechanic that I need an O2 sensor eliminator kit becasue the previous owner did nothing with it, but tape it out of the way, when he upgraded to a Yoshi system. Where do I get these and how much do they cost? Would like a power commander but that is not in the budget for a while yet.

And the next question is are they hard to add onto the system?

The O2-sensor shall not be disconnected as longs as you are not using a Power Commander. The O2 sensor needs to be in place to control the air/fuel mixture.

It is only when a PC is installed that the O2-sensor shall be disconnected and a O2-sensor eliminator shall be plugged into the harness side of the O2-sensor wire.

I would suggest you read this recent thread
Solved - 2005 Blackbird, surging @ 2 - 3k - rough running, fuel, plugs? help!!

I had lean surge all cured by fitting an O2 sensor eliminator. I am NOT running a power commander. Sorry but R1000 you are incorrect!

The description I gave is how it SHOULD be if the the ECU handles the O2-sensor information correctly. I was not aware that there is a bug in theFI XX ECU software, which could be fixed by this workaround. Thanks for sharing your findings :-)

Do you know if this is representative for all FI bikes, i.e. from 99 to the latest model, or if the problem was fixed correctly by Honda at some point?

I'm led to believe that the lean surge problem will affect all FI birds with O2 lambda sensors in the exhaust. Though it seems only certain people notice it, you seriously will if like me you use yours round town at low revs and low throttle openings
I was told by a honda tech that honda did this for emissions reasons. I'm guessing that early FI models don't have cats or O2 sensors.

Interesting information, thanks. Did you check the A/F ratio over the RPM range after disconnecting the O2-sensor, or is it overall running so well that there is no need for this?

This thread on a VFR forum, linked by Gareth in the other thread has some key information relating to what the ECU uses the O2 sensor for.
Make Your Own O2 Sensor Eliminators - VFRD

In short it runs perfectly.. I haven't checked any ratios as the thread makes all clear! Basically the ECU makes it super lean at low revs/throttle openings for emissions purposes.
