Hi guys I am new to this site however I am very impressed anyway. I have a 2000 XXY model bird in the UK. I have had the FI light coming on for the last month. I completed the FI light fix by soldering the wiring about three weeks ago however. The fault code flashes 25 indicating that the knock sensor is faulty. The exausts which are standard bird issue also smell strongly of un burned fuel (running rich) after a 10 mile or more run. Has anyone changed the knock sensor before? Also I believe the knock sensor advances/retards the timing to compensate for anything running strangely in the engine. If the knock sensor is at fault, would the timing change put too much fuel into the bores which will not be burned and then chuck it out through the exhaust? As you can prob see, I have a little knowledge of engines but I need further advice on this problem. Anyone out there with good advice will be a friend for life because this problem is tainting my sexy bird and spoiling my ride.

Thanks
Steptoe.

If the knock sensor is indeed faulty, then your ECU is most likely running the engine in "safe mode", i.e. a program that will neglect input from sensors like knock sensor, air intake sensor, lambda sensor etc etc, and just used preset parameters that will keep the engine running in almost any conditions (poor fuel quality, a wide variety of altitudes etc). This program will however NOT make the engine run optimally, and horsepower may be decreased by as much as 30% (on cars anyway). These preset parameters will probably give the engine a richer fuel mixture (to prevent overheating) and less advanced ignition timing (to prevent pinging on low grade fuel).

I say replace the knock sensor and see if it helps.. Perhaps someone with a FI bike will chime in and give you some more/other advice. Good luck!

Oh, and welcome to the forum!!

Thanks Leftlaner. I have ordered a new Knock Sensor, £120 from my local dealer. Not cheap but if cures the problem, money well spent in my book. The sensor should be in soon, so will keep you updated.

Thanks

traffic273 Thanks mate. I like it here. Big city so the riding isn't the best but lots of fun stuff to do. I have some friends from the UK (Liverpool area) that come in every year for a holiday. They really enjoy the Chicago area and the diversity of the people and architecture. Chicago was recently named as the most Architcturally diverse city in the world for whatever that is worth. It was probably the girl scouts or something that determined the winner for all I know.

The UK at the moment is very expensive and very dull. At present, I am looking to move to Canada and join the Police out there with my family. It has to be better out there plus better roads to ride on. Keep in touch.

Guys I would move anywhere away from the UK, too expensive, too much crime and everyone is trying have you over (make a quick buck). A friend of mine lives in Texas and runs a working ranch (lucky git). Another friend and his partner has left Thames Valley Police in the UK and joined Sydney Police another option. If anyone out there wants to pay for me, the fat wife, two screams kids and a lovely looking bird to come over to see you in paradise, just let me know.
Regards
