I was riding to work the other day. It's normally an aggressive and fun ride at 5am. Traffic is just right to to do a little bit of bobbing and weaving. I get about 3-5 miles from work and slow down to exit the e-way. next thing I hear is a metal on metal clanking sound in the engine. I finish my journey to work and have my bike towed to the shop. The bike didn't seem to lose power but the sound was louder than the dual Micron pipes. It sounds really jacked up. Does that sound familiar to anyone? If so, how bad in the hole am I?

Not sure. I would think you would have some lose of power with a spun bearing but I'm not an expert. Maybe a valve slapping off of a piston head since you mention a loud metal on metal sound.

There was a guy who posted a similar problem here once before. It turned out to be that the CCT needed to be replaced.

the mechanic listened to it and said it might be the timing chain. He said that its a rather involved fix and could cost over 500 bucks. I just put 700 into it about a week ago for tires, brakes and the low beam lamp not working. Btw, the lamp still doesn't work after I drove it for week.

I would have to agree with PJNXX, the CCT is a common noise on the 'bird. The fix is cheap and easy. Check with John01xx for the part and check the post by Warchild on the procedure. It takes all of about half an hour to do. I did mine and no problems since. The only noise I have now is when I downshift and let the motor slow the bike down there's a sound like a BB being shaken in a metal tube. I think that it is the PAIR valve? I have'nt tried to unhook the vacuum line yet to confirm. Cheers.

Check and change the CCT first, then see if you need to take it back to your mech.

sounds good. thanks guys, I'll give it a shot. Does anyone know of the best place I can purchase a CCT. I'm pretty good at scouring the net, but a push in the right direction always helps.

Check with John01xx on the site for the part and Warchild posted the procedure. There is also a downloadable service manual on the site to help you out. Cheers.

if its the CCT then its an easy fix.
if its the cam chain (unlikely) then still easy fix as this can be replaced without removing the head.
If its the big end (I have knownthem fail)then get another engine as fixing will cost a small fortune!

Thanks Paul and Paul..:-) That's probably exactly how I would describe it. I'll contact John and see if he has any cct's left. BTW, he only lists the CCT Lifter set, is that the same as the actually part itself or a piece of the assembly?

Thanks
Bruce
