Hi guys

I've picked up a FI blackbird motor from ebay with a very unusual failure. The last journal in the inlet camshaft has been starved of oil, picked up and wrecked the head and cam. Its only done 14,000 miles, been dealer serviced since new and came from an un-crashed bike. The failure happened at 65mph in steady traffic after 20mins of running on warm day.

I can easily throw another head on the engine but I'm keen to work out what caused the failure as everything else seems fine. My thoughts so far are

1 - possible oil blockage/contamination - possible but unlikely as dealer serviced
2 - oil pump failure - looks ok but will strip anyway - again unlilely
3 - manufacturing defect in head/camshaft - possible but unheard of

Any thoughts, opinions or advise on where to go next are welcome

thanks

jr

Well my thought is oil starvation you said last cam journal? if you check the oil circuit you will probably find this is the case and the previous owner either did not change the oil or check level or did not have the proper amount of oil in engine.

Thnks gixxer

Must confess I suspect the same. The previous owner confessed to being a mechanical numpty. The bike was entirely dealer serviced and it was the same dealer that diagnosed the failure ....they said the oil level was fine.....but they would say that wouldnt they

Also beng such a rare failure (as in never heard of it happening ever) it does tend to suggest a human error factor
