Hi People,
I recently purchased a 2001 bird that had been in storage for 2 years. When removed from storage it was only running on three cylinders. However after a few blocks it started to run on all 4 and very sweetly. I suspect it was a stuck injector. Now it normaly starts fine but from time to time it will start on 3 cylinders (hot or cold) but quickly run on 4. I have had injected cars that do very similar things. I have done around 500km since purchase and it has 28000kms on it now.
1. Is my diagnosis correct?
2. If so, what is the best way to clear it/improve it.
3. If not, what do you suggest

Include some injector cleaner in your next couple of fuel ups. if that doesn't help then I would get it replaced (the troubling one) and you should be gold

Hi Folks,
Thanks for the responses. I have tried injector cleaner and different fuels and the problem still exists. Its only when I first start the bike, cold in particular but also a little when hot. Once it starts running on all 4, it is perfect. Runs very smooth and is good on fuel. Only had it to 220kph so far but still pulling like a train.
Now I'm after more suggestions. Could it be fouled or corroded plugs from the two years in storage or do I stick more cleraner in and see what it does?

You could pull the plugs and inspect them. Change them if needed. It's possible that it could be a coil if the problem is electrical. Might also check the connections to the CDI box under the seat to ensure they are snug and no wire have been pulled loose. Does it seem to be getting any better? If so, it might just be a bad injector if the cleaner is showing some results but not complete.

Bird coils are a waste spark system so there is one coil for 2 cylinders, I think a coil fault is unlikely. I would check the fuel pressure regulator. It sounds like a leaking regulator passing fuel down the vacuum hose and flooding that cylinder. It could just be a stuck injector but if that were the case it should have other symptoms.

Well it seemed to be getting worse. I have changed the plugs to make sure to eliminate them as a possibility with a minor improvement. I have since found another Australian made injector cleaner using synthetic sulphur and the results are very pleasing. It is also back to normal. I suspoect now the injectors have gone from fully gummed to partial causing a bad spray pattern, then to good. I will check the brand of the cleaner as I can't recall the name ATM but I got it from Supersheap Auto

Even though I had a stuck injector when I picked up the bike, numerous bottles of injector cleaner later the starting was getting better but then it started to get worse. The bike would blubber both from cold and hot. It was obviously flooding as I needed to open the throttle up to get it to start from hot. Then I noticed the fuel economy seemed to be getting worse. AH HA, sounds like a fuel pressure regulator. Sure enough the vacumm tube leading back to cylinders 2 & 3 was full of fuel. Blocked the tube off and ran the regulator port to atmosphere and the bike starts perfectly every time. All I need now is a new regulator. Bad news is there are none in OZ and are 2 weeks from Japan

Glad you resolved your problem other than having to wait for your part for two weeks.
