I got my new motor today and I need some guidance as to how to make the switch. My first question is how do I remove the gasoline thats in the tank now? I do have a service manual for my 2003 bird and a couple of of good friends who will help. The advice I can get here will make my bird a survivor. Thanks!

How much fuel do you have? Garage with work bench? If it's close to full I would siphon it out but less than that have one of your friends catch the hose with a rag when you disconnect and drain your tank in a gas can. I'm sure you guys can figure a way to drain your tank from there. I would plug my line actually if I had to do it. Good luck with your surgery

I got the tank, exhaust pipes, manifold, radiator all off. I'm still looking at the carbs with the FI system and the various wires. Is there anything I should be really careful with this stuff? And also the chain. My bro tells me to buy a chainbreaker kit. The manual says to loosen the rear wheel and take the engine sprocket cover off to free the chain. Which should I do? Another thing I do not understand is that the exhaust port on the #1 cylinder doesn't have the blackness that all the other ports exhibit. That is where the damage is done but it makes me wonder how long? Thanks for the syphon tip. Sometimes when I get overwhelmed the simplest things fly right over my head.

Just loosen the rear wheel & slide it forward & you should be able to get the chain off, take note of all your vacuum lines as well & siphon the gas into that new cruiser you just bought
BTW, how's the weather up there, it hit 80 here today

................... Everyone in his lifetime and on different bikes have put the vacuum lines back the wrong way when reinstalling the tank

Having done an R&R similar to this before I have learned to keep a digital camera in my garage and take a TON of pictures as I disassemble things especially like vacuum hoses. These become invaluable as you put things back together.

I need to take some pictures. Taking it apart is not so bad. I'm glad I got a book and an awesome pair of visegrips. The chain came off the new motor easy enough. It amazes me that there really isn't alot to the bike when its stripped clean. So far so good. I'll get some pics up soon. Thanks for asking.

I got the throttle body off. All the vacuum lines remained attached. The injector wires are all labeled as are the water hoses. The rear tire is loose. The chain remains. I want to reuse the front sprocket and the hydraulics in the clutch. When I remove the sprocket cover to release the chain and sprocket can I reconnect the hydraulic clutch so I can reuse it too? This has been quite a learning experience so far. I'm almost 1/2 way there. Still a long way to go. Thanks.

That fist pic of the clean exhaust port. Although if that is the engine coming out, not so bad.

Could be no spark or no fuel causing that. No fuel would be more likely as unburnt fuel/air mix would be ignited in the header & blacken it anyway, (I think)?

The bike had gone from the cold of Massachusetts to the warmth of Florida in a trailer. My bro had picked it up @ the shippers house. He told me the battery was dead and it needed a jump. He was bringing it to his place when it lost all power on the X-way. He trailered it to his house and called me. When I finally got down there I drove it a little while hoping it was just H2O in the tank or something like that. It was running but it had no power. It felt and sounded like it was running on 3 cylinders. Sure than shit the #1 manifold pipe was cold as could be. So we checked the plug and couldn't tell anything. We trailered it to a dealership and they finally told me that the exhaust cam cracked and caused all kinds of damage. The exhaust camshaft cracked, cylinder head and the guides were all junk. They also said it may have been caused by over or under torquing of the camshaft cap. That meant nothing to me then and means less now. I don't understand why that exhaust port isn't all blackened and could that mean that the injectors are part of the problem? I don't want a repeat of the problem. Thanks.

it only costs 30 bucks or so to have the injectors tested for flow and similarity, so i would make sure i do that. it costs more if you want them cleaned, etc. any injector shop can do it. if they are all close to the same, then the injectors are ruled out. just mark the injector in that cylinder before you hand them to the shop so that if one is bad you'll know if it was the one in that cylinder. if the cam doesn't work right in that cylinder, the exhaust port won't look the same. could be the injector is fine. check that plug wire for signs of arching at both ends, and compare the resistance to one of the other wires. resistance is pretty high, above 5k. that should rule out ignition problems on that hole.

Out with the old in with the new come Sunday. I got everything disconnected. I still gotta drain the oil and disconnect a couple of wires. Pictures will follow. It amazes me that a machine that fast comes apart so easily. At 125MPH I felt like I was on a steel rail and not what it looks like when its all apart.

Its in the 30's with rain here. Snow 50 miles north. Springtime in N.E. We won't see the 80's for another month. My bike should be back by then. That Florida sunshine was great while it lasted.

Here's what I think happened. The exhaust cam cracked in 1/2 in the #1 cylinder. Maybe causing the exhaust camshaft cap crack over the #1 cylinder. Compression is lost. #1 cylinder fires no more. Bike is dead on the X-way. Bike sounds like its running on 3 cylinders because it is. I went to Hooters for wings the 1st nite. It was running very rough and stalling. The next morning after another oil change(the oil looked ****ed up) we tried again. 40 miles later the fat lady started singing. Now the damage. The engine cover is a mess becuz the camshaft banging. The cylinder exhaust opening is clean because its been getting a nice gasoline bath. And the engine is done. I haven't dropped the motor yet I'm waiting for parts. So I think the injectors are O.K. No one around here has a flow tester fo injectors.
