Good morning, I am looking for some advice on my newly purchased 1998 BB with 42k on it. I picked her up 4 days ago and test rode her and she is one powerful lady I tell you! I wanted to do a thorough job of checking her when I got her home. I started removing all the body panels for few reasons, one was to have them painted in glory Red and not the current black ,two was to clean her from top to bottom which brings me to my question. While I had the tank off I wanted to change the spark plugs so when I pulled them I saw oil on the threads on two of them but not on the electrodes. Is this a sign of a problem?

Was there oil on the plug body? Leaking valve cover gasket? The well where the plugs seat has a drain hole to allow water , and other things out. 42K is low mileage for ring problems.

I'd go with the leaking valve cover gasket also. The oil winds onto the threads when you undo it. I had a similar problem when it came back from it's first service.

Doesn't sound too serious. Gasket is my guess as long as the electrode is dry.
Sounds like a nice 'Bird.
Give it a good going over and don't scrimp on anything !
After all, it is your neck on the line.
Best of luck.
