Hi all,

Just a question about idle speed, and the systems governing this.

A quick run down, I had taken my LHS lower panel off the do some work, and when I replaced it, the shoulder screw that holds the panel bracket to the frame fell off whilst I was trying to put it on and fell into a gap behind the water pump. Had to remove the two coolant hoses (which was a joke in itself - some Honda engineer must be laughing every time he thinks about this) to even see the screw. When I removed these coolant lines I lost approx 1.5 litres of coolant (understandable). After I extracted the screw from its hidey hole, I replaced all the hoses and went to replace the lost coolant (with new Motul coolant). I could only get about 100ml in through the radiator cap before it overflowed (again, understandable - thermostat was not open). I also put extra coolant in the rear reservoir.

My situation became apparent when I went to start the engine. The engine fired up fine, but after 10secs or so, the idle speed began to climb up to 2,000rpm and then to 3,000rpm with the temp climbing to 117deg C.

My question is, is this rising idle speed due to there being a loss of coolant in the wax unit water hoses (I assume this is the "choke unit" on the FI models)? Or is there something else I have missed? I tried to adjust the idle speed down with the adjusting screw, but it made no difference.

After the engine cooled down completely, I was able to get nearly another litre of coolant into the radiator.

I'm a bit too worried about the rising idle speed to take the bike out for a ride right now, dont want to get out on the road and find the idle continuing to rise (for safety reasons).

Thanks for any help.

I drained all my coolant using the water pump bleed and cylin der bleed a few days back. I got almost 2L into the radiator upon re-fill, I started her up and she idled normally, then a couple of mins later I gave the throttle a couple of snaps and shut her off at about 90degC to ensure thermo was open, I then got about another 200ml into the radiator.

No fast idle problem there, and I lost alot more than 1.5L coolant when it drained.

Bit the bullet and went for a ride after filling up the coolant again. Ran like a charm, albeit a lot hotter than normal (97-105 not super hot, but hotter than normal for the type and duration of the ride) Idle rpm stayed between 1000 - 1400rpm.

Took it for a second ride this afternoon and the temp went up for a little while at the start of the ride, but after 15 mins it came back down to normal.

I am supposing that the original problem lay in the coolant loss to the wax unit coolant hoses and therefore the choke system not working properly.
