Ok, guys, I know that vavle clearance checks and adjustment threads are everywhere on here, but here is one I cound not find
I torn down my 95 cbr900 per manual and when I pulled the pulse generator rotor cover off to line up the marks for #1 and 3 intake, what do you know there are NO FREAKING MARKS. Now what, can I check the valves like you would a car, I used to put a screw driver in cylinder #1 and stop when it reaches the top can I do this or can someone tell me an easier/ better way? I keed to get this checked by tomorrow so I can get to the dealer to get the correct size shims. Picture attached, litter blurry but you can see no marks, it does not look like it ever had any

Well, I hope I did it right, I found TDC of CY#1 then made my timing mark in the correct place, I then proceeded to follow the manual and all clearances were within spec. If I did it wrong please reply, and I will just take it to the dealer

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but not only does the cylinder need to be at the top of the chamber, but also on the compression stroke. On a car you check this by plugging the spark plug hole with your finger, when it blows off, you're on the compression stroke, if it vaccuums and sucks in, then it's on the intake stroke. Anyone.... anyone.... Bueller...

Just watch the cam lobes as you turn over the engine. When the inlet and exhaust are rocking you set the opposite cylinder in the pair 1 and 4 are together as are 2 and 3.
Alternatively you can turn the engine till the cam lobes are as close as possible to vertical on both cams (they will be splayed out from each other in a v) and then set that cylinder.
Or if you are really confused just turn it till the camlobe is 180 degrees around pointing away from the bucket and then check that valve.

JohnS | That is how I've always done it. I don't even pull the cover bolt at the crank, I just put the trans in top gear and turn the engine with the rear wheel.
Your bike must have an ignition advancer rotor in it like mine.

the cam gears had the normal marks, I checked the clearances both ways mentioned here and they come up the same both time all with in specs, if fact dead center, the engine was built for racing so I would guess the it would have some etras. my valve specs are in .005-.007 ex .008-.010, my valves were, in. .005 and 6 and ex .009 on all. The dyno reads 190 rwHP. While I had her down, I replaced the brake fuild, oil, coolant. checked all other items in the chart as well, Shes ready to roll.
