Ok heres my Issue.
My 97 birdy (carbs) bogs down alot when I really get on it, and mostly in 5th and 6th gear. Out on the hwy she kinda sputters and doesnt quite run right.
Now the run up from first, is good and my lower gears seem fine.
It really seemed like a fuel issue of some kind to me, but I do have a little vibration in there I dont too much like.
I pulled one of my carbs out and looked at my needle and it desn't have the grooves you usually assosiate with aftermarket jet kits, so I'm sure it's probably stock, and I have a 4-1 exaust and yoshi rs-3 slip ons.
AI have heard it both way that a.) I shouldnt need a jet kit since there slip ons, and B.0 that I do. I was under the opinion that I should have to jet it to match that exaust.
I wanted to ask about CCT as well could this be having an effect, and could some help me on the proper process to adjust this.
And then theres the possibility that it could be timing, but that would effect the performance overall correct, not just in 5th and 6th.
I'm lost, and I am trying to decide what steps to take at this point, and I'm kinda broke after spending 400+ getting my charging system back on track, (unfortunately after all that, about a dollar worth of solder fixed it).
I thank everyone in advance for their help with this
Puck

You can't have a 4-1 and slip-ons.If you had slip-ons you'd have the stock head pipe which leads into 2.
You want to check all the easy stuff first, air filter, plugs, fuel filter, fuel flow.CCT won't slow you down in 5th and 6th,you'll hear the cam chain rattling if it's going. There's a screw in it that can be tightened for a temp fix.
I think you can rule out timing.
Did that needle look worn at all?

No not really, I been thinking since it first started I just needed a carb adjustment, it might just be out of sync or something she does backfire a little here and there so I know its probably a little rich.

and idk about that exaust thing it goes from 4-2-1 and then it slips on there
i thought stock was 4-2 then turned out to either side for the twin exaust

Aftermarket exhaust always need to be rejetted for best performance.
Could also be dirty jets
CCT is Not likely part of the problem you describe even tho I am the one who sells CCT's !!!!

Yeah its jets I just got through inspecting my needles and their obviously stock and I know that doesn't match my exaust so I ordered a dynojet stage 1 kit and I'll be putting that in wed or thurs.
thanx for the help.

Aftermarket exhaust would be 4-2-1 or 4-1. OEM is 4-2-1-2.
What RPM does it bog down at? How many kms on the bike? Have the plugs been replaced/checked?

42k miles and yeah its got all new plugs wires. I'm gonna rejet it wed or thurs and see if that does it.
bogging down around 4500-5000 but really anytime you really lay in to it it likes to spudder and then it'll jump. obnoxious as hell.

Yeah, sounds like fuel issue. My other main suspect, would have been burnt/fouled/wrong gap plugs.

...big throotle openings at high revs and bogging...could be fuel floater adjustment issue ,low gas pressure or worn gas pump, unless you get black smoke then you might have an over rich problem...dunojet kit stage 1 and a looooot of testing..(havin the carbs in hand for 20 times is not an insane possibility..messing with that...) goog luck..

i had a similar problem before my '97 was rejetted. it would bog down when i'd get on the throttle then it's jump and haul. put in the dyno stage 2 jet kit and it's been great ever since. i have the Yoshi RS-3 full system also...
but i dont understand why it would only happen in 5th and 6th...? strange... |

It wasnt always in 5 & 6, really it seemed when it had a load on it at cruising speed. I put in the stage 1 jets and ts better already I still haven't got everything adjusted "just so" yet but I noticed the difference right away.
now she bogs a little at low rpm's but it stops when you juice it, but I have just barely begun to get everything adjusted. I think I'm gonna drop all the needles one notch and see what that does. Well i'm gonna try turning my mixture tabs a little more but if that doesnt smooth it out I'll drop the needles.

...jesus....ha,ha,ha,ha... ...by the way..before start messing with carbs have in hand some important stuff as new float bowl o-rings ..or a complete carb o-ring set...the disaster awaits for your turn...if the floor is white thats plus 1 for you.... ...for better or worse have a magnet in hand... |

Yeah have a magnet,...for sure, i dropped plenty of stuff putting the new jets in. I only had to adjust my carbs once after changing he jets out,...not 20 times like someone said it might take b4 they got right. I didn't change out the float bowl O-rings tho and I did have a little fuel leakage problem after i got done, so i might have to go back in and do that. but I think I have abad hose somewhere. haven't really messed with it snce I started having starter issues and my tank has been laying on the ground ever since.

I spent the weekend trying to correct the problem with my bike. First off I pulled the tank and air box to access all the hoses. Inspected everything and all looked good. Nothing cracked, loose or broken. Checked air and fuel filters all were good. Put every thing back together and added some STP Carb/fuel system cleaner to the tank. Fired her up and she still surged while cruzing. Getting pissed off now, I recruted a buddy who knows bikes. Right off he said she' got a miss? Guessed it was a plug. So I figured what the hell and stripped her down and replaced all 4 plugs. #4 plug was cooked. By the way figging Cal Coast MC (local dealer) parts dept charged $10.00 per plug! Couldent get'em any where else. Any way's after changing the plugs I shot carb cleaner in all the carbs. Dressed her up and fired her up. She pures like a kitten but when I got her on the freeway she ran great but still SURGED! WTF?!?!?!?!? Do I need to replace the jets, take'em apart and clean'em or does it sound more like a mad coil or maybe a bad plug wire. Any help would be appreciated.... Thank you!!

Well it wasnt the easiest job to change the jets, but it wasnt that bad either? If you are running something like a K&N filter, and or, modified exaust
and you haven't changed your jets it probably is that, could be carb sync, its hard for me to really tell you. I'm deffinately no B.B. guru by any means.
Although I'm quite sure you could rule out bad coil or wire, cause it would do it even when it was at idle. Also $9-11 is the normal range your gonna pay for plugs, they're like $11 here, thats just life. I WOULD consider a jet kit, it's what I needed mabie it'll do it for u too. Good Luck keep us informed.
