Hello everyone!
I have a 2002 Bird and today it did something that it hasn't before. When I went to crank it to ride it to work (yes in the south it's still 70ish degrees), The motor turned over about 2-3 times and then I hear a loud "pop" noise from directly under the gas tank. It sounded like something popped up and hit the bottom of the tank. It's been about a 10 days since I rode it last so it's been sitting in the garage on the battery tender. I don't know if it was pressure or something else that caused the pop noise. Or if it was the gas tank venting somehow (I've no idea if that is even possbile). Anyone else every had this happen or have hear of it? I didn't get a chance to take the tank off to see becuase I had to get going but I'll do it when I get home. Any ideas what I should look for? THanks guys and hope everyone gets to ride soon.

Just tell it gesundheit and go riding. It sounds like it sneezed through the intake. Motors will do that now and again.
If you are in any doubt or the noise was really loud, pull the tank and the top of the air box and have a look around.

Up here in the Great White North (although no snow on the ground yet) my '03 can sit for a month or more before a warm spell comes along and riding is possible. Never heard it sneeze yet. If it run fine afterwards I'd say it was nothing. |

Thanks guys and I will take the tank off and have a look around when I get home tonight. Mike, sorry it's me Rusty, I had some issues with my e-mail and couldn't get logged back in, but the boss took care of it for me. Hopefully I will report back later tonight or tomorrow and let you know if I see anything. The "pop" noise was really strong or loud.

Could it be the FI version of a carby fart? If it happens again, inspect throttle bodies and throats and airbox connectors. Also check plugs and wiring to and from coils.

Don't want to be the fly in the ointment, but the popping sound you are hearing is usually not a good thing.
Possible cause you ask? could be a stuck intake valve allowing compression past it. Could be a timing problem. (once again a valve issue) or it may....may be a fueling issue.
Did it only do it the once, has it done again since, does it do it everytime?
Let us know
Lou

...i have also a strange popping sound ...like it comes front below the air intake cover...noticeable as the bike gets warm 3-4 minutes after i start...and it gets faster when i pull the throttle..hope that its not the pair system..could be also a loosen exhaust manifold bolt...damn..

Just to follow up: I haven't been riding my bird much lately due to work and family. It happened just once more out of about 10 start ups. It only happenes while I'm pushing the start button. I plan on taking off the tank and giving it a really good look through in a few days. I will get back to you guys after that. I have a friend at KWS that is going to give me a hand. I'll keep you guys posted and thanks for helping out with the suggestions and comments.

...the pair system might be suspicioys about my undertank noise issue...bent or cut pipes or broken reeds (yes the pair system has reeds under those suction caps)...
