Hi guys,

I own a 1997 Superblackbird and want to change the oilcooler location .

Under the coolant radiator , i wanna put the oilcooler.

Are here some people who do this also (Naked Bake or StreetFighter owners?)

Are there shorter Oil-lines (aftermarket) and connections?

Thanks for any reply,

Ed

HEL and other vendors do market braided hose line kits for replacing the steel tubing runs on the XX. AN (Aircraft Numerical) hose fittings are used. The hose ends are the easy item to source. It is the cylinder block and oil cooler adapter parts that are some what more problematic to source, but not impossible. You must keep in mind (it is a common design feature of Honda) that although the fittings that might adapt braid lines to the engine block and oil cooler look the same to the naked eye, they may in fact not be so. In some cases the spacing of the adapter piece bolts is slightly different, which I guess helps to make for an idiot proof install (you could not mix up one end of the OEM tubing run with the other as they do not fit ). If you can source the adapter pieces (x4, two at the engine block, two at the oil cooler) you can then run braided lines to any location you desire. you might also be able to change out the cooler to another design/shape if you desire. Check out the different size and fitments that the Earls coolers provide.

A couple words of warning: The 1997-98 model year XX machines are the coolest running Blackbirds produced (from all accounts). This may be in no small part due to the fact that the stock oil cooler location, which takes cooling air directly from the nose cone/fairing inlets. Yes you can move the cooler with custom hose runs, but what effect this will have on the coolers performance is an unknown. In stock form the whole cooling package works very well (IMHO). I'm sort of one to not mess with success. I'd also take care in providing some road debris protection should be go to a lower/behind the front wheel location. You do not wish to rupture the cooler with something flung off the front tire.

I always say 'anything is possible' and this is certainly possible as shown in the previous posts ...... however adding to

by moving the oil cooler to the position that you are wanting to you will actually be adding more heat than even the inj (and X11) experience.
Heat soak from the headers into the radiator is a major contributor to the many 'overheating' / 'overheating in traffic' threads on this forum. An oil cooler in this position will experience a similar heat soak problem which will almost certainly be compounded by turbulent airflow created by the front wheel.

When I was 'packaging' my supercharged Bird (radiator, oil cooler, intercooler and supercharger oil cooler) I looked at using the area that you are talking about and discounted it for the reasons mentioned.

Yes I appreciated what you are doing FightrBird just pointing out the problems of your suggested position.

Have you thought about using the area just below the headlight? If I was building a streetfighter I would be looking at that area for several reasons.
1. Good airflow (cooling).
2. Lots of ugly stuff to hide there.
3. It might be possible to utilise the front sub-frame bolting positions for bracketry.
4. With cleaver cutting of the brackets you should be able to avoid the swing of the forks.
5. Exposes the whole of the radiator to airflow so improving the water cooling.
6. The hoses would be easily to clamp and keep the set up looking clean.

Just a thought, but turning the oil cooler into a 'feature' might be a good way of achieving a good clean build.
