Overheating problems

Hey there fellow blackbirders!

Im on a trip round europe, and after 14.000 kms so far not any problems, had to change tires, brakepads and chain, but thats it.

Now on to the issue, today I dried my clothing on the BB, by just letting it stand in iddle slowly chugging along at 1100 rpms. I think for about 30 minutes.

Later today I went riding, and the temperature rose very fast, and during some semi offroad riding, it actually redlined. Something ive never seen before. So I stopped, let it cool off, and then went on, I noticed that again it went wery high very fast, but I went out on normal road before it redlined again. Here it stayed like 3 mms from redline, with the air vent more or less permanently on.

I know this is bad, but how bad is it? Im in serious trouble if its something I cant fix myself, since im in Ukraine and theres like 3000 kms home. And belive me, you WONT find a certified honda mc mechanic in this country =D

So, gimme some starters please! And dont tell me im screwed =D

Oh, and yea, this gotta be the most retarded way anyone has ever messed up theyr BB.

Re: Overheating problems

Let her cool and pull the right lower cover. Check to make sure your radiator is full of coolant. And oil correct in the engine.
Was there any gunk around the radiator cap or seal? Clean them with a soft cloth and water.
Check the radiator for dirt and bugs. They can get clogged up. Clean with soap and water, but don't use a pressure washer.
If all checks good, start her and let her warm. Does the fan come on? Possible blown fuse.
If you were low on coolant, tighten all hose clamps. Start her and look for leaks.
Try to find and use distilled water.

As for the most retarded way to screw up a bird??? Don't ask me how many times I dropped mine before I got that center stand shit right.

Thanks man!

I was awake all night wondering if maybe it was just a lack of coolant problem, or a clamp gone loose. Ill take her apart today and see what I can find.

Distilled water, thats gonna be a tuff one here, especially explaining them what it is, since they dont speak english/german, and I dont speak Ukrainian =D

Hehe, luckily mine dosnt have a center stand

Thanks

Re: Overheating problems

you were right redxxrdr, it was a loose clamp and some leaking water that caused it, I tightened it all up, and now its fine again.

thanks again.

Re: Overheating problems

likely to have been triggered off by the 30 minute idling... did that once to my XX at slight higher rpm and she seriously boiled over... good luck with the rest of the ride. Ravi

Re: Overheating problems

Fantastic,
Always best when it is simple. Loose clamps seems to be a common problem. I think that multiple heat cycles causes them to loosen.
Enjoy your trip and post some pictures.

The charging system was even close to full output at 1100 RPM. The probably fried the battery. Which in turn cause the R/R to go.

Yea, I had unknowingly ran low on coolant and was sitting in Daytona's bike week stop and go traffic and the bike kept getting hotter and hotter and it fianlly died and I couldn't get it to turn over. Sitting on it I was able to walk it into the Honda tent area in front of the track and they called a honda club service tech to give me a jump or tow me to a shop. While I was waiting, I checked and the overflow was empty. I filled it up and as it sucked most of it back into the bike's cooling system, I realized why it had over heated.

The bad part was that it had killed the battery. I was able to start it from the Jump and found where the local Walmart was and they had a battery in stock and was good to go. Once I got home I did a coolant system flush and refilled with coolant mix and wetter water and have had no problem for 2 years.

Sorry you're in the middle of a place that you can't get the maintenance done, but at least if you park it on an incline you can start it by letting it roll and build up speed and dump the clutch in 2nd gear. Oh yea, make sure the key is turned on and the kill switch is not on.

I learned this from experience when I tried pushing my wife's bike down the steet to start it. I kept pushing and pushing with her riding it and it would not start. Then I see she had the key off and more pushing and I see she has the kill switch on. AARRRRGGGG, about that time I was dead and just barely got it back into the garage and just put the charger on it.

To run the engine for along time can block the katalitic converter.

Re: Overheating problems

Just wondering ??????????????????
Kiriath,
Did you get the case fixed? Or a truck to take your bike home.
Or did you just stay with the Blonde?
