BB won't stay running and white smoke from pipes

So I was trying to get my newly acquired Bird to fire up today so I could adjust the idle. Well it didn't really want to start so I used a little bit of starting fluid and got it to fire up but I couldn't keep it running and I got some white smoke out of the pipes. Anyone know what it may be? Possibly from the starting fluid?

Starting fluid is not good for spark ignited engines, but I suspect that's what you were seeing. Check your fueling, it sounds like the engine is starving. And save the ether for the diesels.
Where are we going...and what am I doing in this hand basket??

How long has it been setting. You may need to do some carb cleaning. You can try either seafoam in the tank. Get her lit and try and keep her running for a bit. Then let it set for a day then light it again run it for a bit then let it soak again. It should get progressively better. The only other product i have used that worked real well for this is called Mercruise Marine 2+4 carb cleaner. If you have Marina nearby they should carry it. This stuff does work miracles from first hand experience.
Looks like they have changed the name but should be the same formula
    Mercury Marine Quickleen Engine Treatment

I wasn't aware that it was bad for these motors, I'll keep that in mind. According the the PO it had been sitting for a few months. I've never taken carbs apart before, will I need to buy new seals/gaskets if I take them apart? Thanks for the help

It will depend on how they come off. If it isn't your daily commute I would say go for it if it leaks you can always order and replace to help save the cost.

Re: BB won't stay running and white smoke from pipes

Thanks for all the help guys. I'm having some big problems getting the carbs off though, I seem to only be able to loosen the intake boot clamps and the clamps for the carbs are inacessable. Do I just use a bit of force and get the boots off and then seperate them from the carbs? I'm trying to find the bit in the manual that talks about carb maintanince right now.

Re: BB won't stay running and white smoke from pipes

I got 'em off... and before I tear them apart I see what one of my problems is already, rust, I noticed it in the fuel filters upon closer inspection and I peaked in the tank and it was pretty evident. Hopefully its not too bad and some sea foam can take care of the problem. Are there any other methods of cleaning out gas tanks that you guys have done in the past?

    Mike
They have most likely hardened from age and use so they will take a good set. You are most likely going to have to pry them free. Just be careful what you brace and pry against.

If it has been setting for a long time you can pool moisture in the collector. It will puff white till it is burnt off. It may not go away with just one cycle of heat and cold. Check the smell to see if it has a fuel smell or nothing. Nothing is water vapor

Re: BB won't stay running and white smoke from pipes

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm gonna check the jets to make sure there is no debris clogging any of them, then I'll clean out the tank and see how it runs then.

Re: BB won't stay running and white smoke from pipes

    Hey Mike
Could you get me a pic of your throttle linkage I am trying to see if my cruise control can be used on a carby. The section I am looking at the section that the throttle cables come into.
Here is a pic of the section on a Injected bird. I am looking to see if the same tab is there on the Carbies.
