FI warning Light

My bike was in storage for 3 years before I bought it. Injectors were clogged (got it cleaned) but couldnt get immediate stock of fuel filter.

After my second ride, the FI warning light flashed 25 blinks- knock sensor error. I suspect related to the fuel filter issue above. I need to erase the malfunction (reset) and see if it comes up again now that the filter is replaced.

The shop manual indicates I need to locate the service check conector and follow a simple procedure...dismantled the seat cowl, cldnt find any service connector.

Advice anyone?

Hey man Luke from south africa. I've just bought my bird recently and this weekend had the same thing, light flashed 25 times. How do you know its the fuel filter though? I also wanted to reset the service check also couldn't find it???? Have you had any luck yet?

First you will need to replace that old fuel filter, it is probably clogged and not allowing 100% flow through. I personally would not ride until you replace this, also if you un-hook the battery for 30 minute's this should reset everything (I think?)

Hi Luke, Actually all the XX shop manual does is to correlate the 25 blinks to the knock sensor. My guess that its the fuel filter is not 100% as fzcbrklxrider suggests causing the engine to lean out at high revs (as my injetcors were jammed and fully clogged when I first got it)

I had replaced the filter recently and am heading out right now to disconnect my battery. Fingers crossed the error gets reset..... Cheers..!!

The funny thing is when I done the trip this last weekend the bike was fine for over 300km non stop but gave problems when I opened the throttle quickly the last 10km's. I must admit that I keep the revs very low (I'm still a little scared of the bird, stepping from a hurricane 750 to the blackbird is a big jump!!), around 5000rpm's. If the fuel did make jelly in the filter shouldn't it disolve if you run the bike for a while? Also it doesn't look like my bike remembers the error, when the light comes on and I stop it gives the two slow flashes and 5 fast, but if the bike stands for a while no problem and no light even if I let her idle on the side stand for a while. What you think??? PS the filter in south africa is really expensive and I have to wait 2 weeks.

The filter is pricey here in KL and also takes a week or 2, bought mine in Singapore along with some other spares. Let you know after this weekend ride if I managed to erase the error by diconnecting the battery for 2 days. Cheers..!

The manual said to jump the service connector, well mine had been cut off for some time now. My 03 has a brown and green wire to the connector that I located on the left side of the bike bundeled with the tail light wires, spliced them together turn the key on, count the blinks. Turn key off then back on, then remove the two wires, the fi light should stay on for 5 seconds, during this time connect the two wires again. The fi light should turn off and then start to blink, should have the memory erased then.

Yep thanks found my service connector in the boot where the indicator connectors are under the ECM. Maybe your's still there?

I took rear cowl out again on my 00, noted the indicator wiring, even took off the ECM....no sign of the service conector.

You can always make another service connector, the service manual is on this site, the green wire is grounded and the brown goes to the ECM, just follow the wiring diagram at the end of the manual.

Has the light come on again?

Well the good news is that I found the connector, bundled and concealed pretty well
Followed the procedures and erased the error message.

Now if I leave the engine idling, no error. When I rev the engine at 4K rpm for 10s the 25 blinks come back which leads me to believe I do have engine knocking.

1. The injector were jammed when I first got the bike, got it ultrasonically cleaned
2. Replaced the fuel filter recently
3. I use premium fuel (RON 97)
4. Iridium plugs (new)

Can some brilliant minds assist on possibilities and solutions for engine knocking..???

Don't know muck about the topic, but did they synchonize the injectors correctly? My experience with the guys in SA is they don't normally do a very good job.

Did you get all 4 injector's cleaned or just 1 ?
when you say knocking can you actually hear a knocking or do you mean knock sensor ?
I would look into replacing all 4 injector's with new or like new condition one's, Thanks

Thx for yr input.
I mean knock sensor.

Got all 4 cleaned. The shop repeated the cleaning cycle until the volume of all 4 injectors are were approximately equal. (320cc if I remember correctly)

Dread replacing the injectors, they wld cost me USD100 per piece in Malaysia...

Also cleaned the connector to the knock sensor and checked wiring for damage, all seems OK. Replacing the knock sensor wld be a problem, I cant source the parts. (BTW, my bike has clocked only 12000km)

Still seems the same....the warning light blinks 25 times with a bit of riding after erasing memory.

Hi There, as it happens I have the exact same problem as you, my understanding of the warning light is not to say you have a knocking engine (all engines will knock) but that something in the knock sensor circuit is faulty and not functioning as it should, my problem started out as an occasional error to now it just comes on every time I go above 4000 revs, I have checked the wiring and every thing is fine, I have been trying to source a good Sensor to try before I buy one bcause I am not totally convince that the KS is at fault (they very rarely fail) ECU's are a funny business I have a hunch that this fault could be anything in the ingnition circuit including throttle position indicator, ignition advance retartd module or the knock sensor................I have been living with this problem now for about 3 months, let me know how you progress, if you have someone nearby ask them to swap out their knock sensor for your and see if your problem goes away, takes 10 mins to do, lift the tank and using a 24mm deep shaft socket remove the sensor, located just below the intake manifold towards the RHS at the back of the engine

Re Premium fuel. I ride an '02, all be it a "Canadian" model but my manual states 87 or higher is fine. 92 O is 10+ cents more a litre and we're being ripped off big time by the oil companies, especially here on the West Coast. Interresting threads on the questionable value of higher octane gas on this site, don't know where though.

This is my problem, and I do not know why, nor am I happy about it. When ever I wash my bike, the FI light stay on for an extended period, until I guess the connections dries out, or what could it be? Has anyone experienced this? Any suggestions?

I agree, if your comp ratio is not high enough, High Oct fuel is a waste...big time



Edit> at the time of this post, Reg fuel in Red Deer, Alberta is 1.21$ a litre
That would make premium around the 1.35$ mark
Yesterday it cost me 23.00$Cad to fill my Bird

I had the KS go down on my 2001 Bird ... bike would run fine above 4k but would not come back down to idle cleanly at junctions or traffic lights ...quite often it would just stall out. The FI light would 'flicker' other times at low rpm.

The KS adjusts the advance/retard of the ignition, so at low revs the retard was not settling the eninge down to tickover ..

I proved it was the knock sensor by both the 'FI Errors' and testing the unit.

I took out the old KS from the bike, locked it (gently) into a vice ...put a multi meter in 'DC milli volt' setting and attached the positive to the sensor connector, the negative to the body of the knock sensor ...then the fun bit ...hit the vice with a steel hammer ...just gently .. and NOT DIRECTLY THE KS itself ... a good sensor will pulse some DC m-voltage from the piezo electric membrane inside the sensor ... a bad one won't ...


Mine set me back £146 GBP ...so not cheap ... but the result was back to a silky smooth tickover and return to idle ... immediate fix.

Ive gone quiet on this matter as I have no issues on the power and smoothness of the bike. Everything works fine except the FI light worryingly stays on..... Next on the action list is to find a bird owner who will let me swap out the KS to verify before I invest the $$ in it.

Hi Twig,
I have replaced the fuel filter, and air cleaner, cleaned all the injectors, cleared the fault in the memory, but the F1 still shows the KS is faulty.
The bike is rough when she starts but then quickly smoothes out. When I rev her she blows a lot of black smoke indicating rich mixture. When she warms up the F1 Comes on. I can feel no difference in performance but she is heavy on juice. Maybe the KS after all.

Sounds like it .... Mr Honda does not spend money lightly ... so I would trust the ECU error codes... Try the test I used with the vice and a decent digital multimeter ...if you see no milli volts being kicked out of your KS then I would source a new one.

Hi everybody.. i think i'm having the Same problems as you all.. My Blackbird is the 2000 version.. the FI light comes on after reaching or holding or engine braking after 3000rpm.. Previously changed the Knock Senser (25 Blinks), Wire Harness, Starter Relay, Charging battery Coil, IAF Senser (7 blinks), Plug cable and more.. my bike is Almost New except the Engine..

Previously found the first piston from the left that spark plug cable torn by the fan. Now the cable has been replace. wondering what should i do in order to troubleshoot..

In service manuel, only 3 factors to have the Knock sensor on, the Engine's knock, Knock senser faulty or ECM Faulty?

i'm very unsure and worried about this. It's been a problem for about half a year.. now seldom rides it due to this.

Can anyone Help me.. Most time my FI light on while holding the bike at 3000rpm or while engine braking from above 3000rpm.. In need expertise..
