Challenge i face in Mumbai (in India) is that traffic is pretty lousy and ambient temperatures are high. So while i'm riding within the city, the fan keeps coming on pretty regularly. So i will have to resolve the issue of electrical load from the perspective that both fans are likely to be running a lot of the time. Yes - no lights are likely to be on at this time. Am therefore hoping to get an answer from the gurus on here about this.

As a layman, next question i was going to ask was whether it is possible to increase the load-bearing capacity of the electrical system itself, to compensate for the increased load from the second fan. Would your option of running a larger battery work towards solving that? (And related - would the stock rectifier work?)
I am doing the following -

HID lights in the front (replacing the LED's as they are not bright enough FOR ME). They are 1/3 of the load compared to the stock H7 bulbs.
LED bulbs for the stop lights - lower load than the standard bulbs
LED bulbs for the front running lights/turn signals - lower load than the standard bulbs.

These three things I feel help lower the load on the system, to offset the load placed by the extra fan. I may also go with a larger battery as TheDuck has.

An alternative and/or different route would be in addition to a larger battery, would be to upgrade the stator and regulator/rectifier -

    Accel Stator pn - 152464
    Accel Regulator/Rectifier pn - 201456

    accel stator.jpgaccel rr.jpg

If I see any negative affects or feel that what I have done is not enough, I will also go to a larger bettery, and replace the Stator and R/R. HTH

If you can see if they will give you the info of how it is wound. Delta or Y the stock stators are a delta configuration which has a little lower out put but lives longer. I have installed an Electrosport Stator in my bird and killed both of them at about 20K miles. Rick at Rick's Motorsports Electrics is winding up one special for me. My Problem is similar to yours heat wise, average temp is 100during the day and I put 80 miles round trip on her 5 days a week.

    Re: Dual Fan Setup

An update for folk’s word is back from Rick on his testing. He spent a month trying different winding combinations. His tests revealed that due to physical constraints there isn't much to be done to increase stator output and maintain longevity. The rotor magnets are fixed and can't be easily upgraded. The Rotor size is obviously set in stone because of the engine parameters IE case and stator winding size. Winding more turns isn't really an option either because of the lugs size in the core. So all things as they are output is what it is and can't be readily changed.

They did testing with a stock R/R and a new MOSFET design. He noted a minimum of 50 watts increase in the output due to the efficiency of the MOSFET R/R. So I hope this info will help you all out some.

Yes. There are 2 different battery trays fitted (or at least there were here!), my 99 Bird came with a deepish tray ...... and the battery fits. Duck was originally 2003 and this had 4 pop out rubber feet in the bottom ....... pop these out any you have a perfect fit.

Cheers beestoys for the update, obviously it would have been good to hear that a couple of tweeks would release a few Kw (!) but it is also good to know that we have what we have and just need to work round it.

    Re: Dual Fan Setup

    Beestoys,

Thank you for that info. It confirms my notion that we have a limited power to work with due to design, and to use LED bulbs to offset the extra load produced by the second fan installation. So far, no issues whatsoever.

    Duck,

Thank you very much for that tidbit. I will verify today whether I have the removable rubber feet. I have not ordered a new battery yet due to worrying about whether or not that would fit (too busy with other projects to just pull the battery and look!) You have been so helpful, thank you.

    Re: Dual Fan Setup

Fans ordered, received and fitted :-) Wildman926's instructions, photographs and subsequent PMs were mighty useful.
Unable to ride the Bird for the last 5 weeks due to a back injury. So need to wait to figure how effective. Idled it for a while with just the running lights on - held temp around 100 but needed to keep the revs at 1500 to avoid the battery draining (as indicated by the voltmeter). So yeah - my concern remains the drain on the battery but will only know once i ride in stop-n-go traffic. Fortunately or unfortunately, the slight dip in temperatures here in Mumbai that we refer to as 'winter' has now come to an end... summer round the corner so will know effectiveness of the fan setup :-)
Have ordered the LED bulbs from superbrightleds.com ; they're on their way and will hopefully help.

Now only need to get the YTX14BS like suggested by TheDuck.

Would getting an aftermarket R/R help? (currently running the stock R/R)

    Wildman926 -thanks again... Ravi

    Ravi,

You are very welcome. I went for a ride last week, 75* f weather and the bike never got above 215*f in traffic. Where as before the mod, and when I brought the bike home, it was hitting 230*f in 50*f weather! It would only go down when the bike was moving. Now, the new fans take care of the heat issues whenever I go for a ride, so far. I also flushed the system, and am now using 50/50 mix of antifreeze and Water Wetter.

I have the stock R/R on currently, with an aftermarket R/R and Stator made by Accel as posted above, on standby.

    Re: Dual Fan Setup

Yup!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The dual fan setup works superbly! Been riding in slow-moving / stop-n-go suburban traffic and yes - the fans are working quite a bit, but the great news is that the bike is not overheating!

Low beam HID from vvme done. LED lights done... the 7443s from superbrightleds are a disappointment w.r.t. brightness vis-a-vis the stock bulbs (which i may return to). Position light and front indicator bulbs are great.

The 14BS battery still awaited. After that, just need to wait and watch that electricals don't generally get fried :-)

Many thanks wildman926... after 6 years of the XX, glad this has gotten sorted. Makes the Bird far more usable locally.

Duck, many thanks for all your help as well...

    Ravi

    Re: Dual Fan Setup

    Ravi,

This is great feedback, as I have been waiting for warmer weather to truly test out the new setup. It was in theory that increasing the cfm across the radiator would fix the overheating/high temp issues with our Bird. Awesome.

I used this LED bulb here to replace my tail light 7443's. You won't be disappointed -

eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices

If I can help with anything else, please let me know.

PS - I just put a superbrace fork stabilizer with fork protectors, all I can say is WOW - Here is what I am talking about -

Honda CBR 1100 F1-Blackbird 1997-2004(intertionally up to 08), Honda - SuperBrace - The Ultimate Fork Stabilizer

Really pleased to read that ravi, I know you have been looking for a solution for a long time.
Credit here has to go to wildman for sorting out the fitment to a 'standard' Bird

Did you get the 62LED 7443? And if so, illuminating in red or white?

I got the 18LED bulb that illuminates in red :-( Should've at least gone for their 45LED option...

I bought the white 68 smd led lights as stated in the auction. You want white unless you have a clear tail lens.
