Re: Gear change very rough
Welcome.
The stator cover, don't know.Is really hotter than an engine cover should be?
Shifting,I would first guess the cogs on second gear are worn a wee bit.Previous ownwer could have been a lousy gear changer, normally the trannies are quite durable.I have been drag racing mine for about 8 years with no trans probs ever.
EVER! There were 49000 k's on it when I bought it,'bout 63000 now.

Re: Gear change very rough
The stator covers do (I feel) get hotter on the Bird than other bikes that I have owned. It is my personal feeling that there is insufficient cooling to the stator (remove the cover and you will find perhaps 3 or 4 drops of oil) so the only cooling is passing air which has to counter the heat build up in the cover from the motor. I've lived with it for 10 years so I'm not loosing any sleep over it!

Re: Gear change very rough
1st to 2nd is a big clunk on every bike I've ever ridden - some worst then others.

Re: Gear change very rough
I'm with Backstreet here. The 1 - 2 shift is always the most difficult to perform smoothly, but you might try checking chain tension - too much slack will tend to magnify shift noises. Using a different oil can also have a dramatic effect on the transmission's behaviour.

I don´t know you guys but...
I LOVE the sound when the first shift is engaged and make a sound like TAC. That is the sound of an aircraft ready to take off so, get da fu*k outta my way!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Gear change very rough
And the cush drive in the rr wheel but I wouldn't normally limit the clunk caused by that to 1-2 shift.
Yes 1-2 shifts are the least smooth by I've never noticed anything unusually bad with mine.
Hey try shifting into 2nd at 10000 rpm, smooth every time!

been there done that. but only one time with clutch. way to dangerous for my taste.
kicking the next one in while closing the throttle for a short time is more my thing.
maybe it´s still rough but you sure have no time for listening ^^

Re: Gear change very rough
I know it is stating the bl..ding obvious but most people never adjust the controls to suit themseves. The first to second lever movement is different to 2nd up to 6th. If 1-2 causes problems then move the lever 1 spline on the shaft and try that out.
I lost the seemless shifting on 'daily bird' when I bought new boots a quick adjustment sorted it.
This is of course presuming that the 'quite noisy' noise is from the gear change and not bearing related.

Re: Gear change very rough
The Stator cover is too hot to touch after a short run this is normal. The gear change is smoother with a few more revs, but the best cure is to do what mister Honda say Use friggin mineral oil Yamaha lube is the best.

There is some truth to that if you don't mind changing the oil all the time.
The Honda oil was good but the best shifting was Motul.
I'll take the clunk.

Maybe thats because you have turns in Austria where we have endless 180 degree tarmac ! I have no problem find long stretches of straight road to test acceleration....
A quick blip without the clutch is actually smoother at those rpm's.
And what do you mean I have no time for listening
,who said that?
You talking to my ex?

Mineral oil just does not cut it.End of story,I will not return comments so as not to semi-hijack the thread.
