Re: Safe Temperature?
jaja, i live in Argentina and this season is not comfy for both of us (BB and me). Are u riding within the city or open road???? I have the ´99 and can´t ride in the city cuz i suffer a lot the heat. On the other hand, i travel on the weekends (240km) and have no problem at all with Temperature.

Re: Safe Temperature?
Agreed, the Bird does run hot in traffic. She likes cool air flowing over the rad. Did you Bird arrive with coolant or have you flushed the system and added fresh coolant? I use Motul Expert(greenish) but I live in the Pacific Northwest so the weather doens't get as hot as your hood. The optimum temp, imo, is 102-104C. I avoid city traffic when possible and I did go into the danger zone during the past summer when stuck in a traffic backup on the freeway, in the very hot sun. The temp gage began to flash and I pulled onto the shoulder in the shade and waited it out. There are coolants and additives(water wetter) perhaps better suited for very hot climates. My last ride of the season, in 10C, my Bird ran superb drinking in the cool air. imo
Peeps from Florida, S California, and other hot climes will offer their advice. I would have a close look at the rad, drain, flush, replace coolant.

Re: Safe Temperature?
What is your average temp in your region at this season ? Did you get that reading while on a stop light or in slow traffic conditions..? 118 celsious is near the danger zone...better do a good check at your cooling circuit, and your fuel system - for faulty parts or settings

Let me tell you something... yesterday i was in traffic and kept for a long time near red line and suddenly something i had never imagined occurred. The FI light suddenly started to bright, keep on like that, and then dissappear. I already read ´bout blinkings and all that FI faults yet this got nothing to do with it. I think it is ´cuz the heat.
Have you been there???
If something happens to my baby am going mad

Re: Safe Temperature?
...to me 2 things can happen...either you have a fuel problem that makes the engine run warmer than it should..or you have a part of the cooling system malfunctioning..(thermostat stuck, radiator cap stuck or bend)....check it soon to prevent any forthcoming (and more expensive) damage...

Re: Safe Temperature?
never had been an issue before but today when i rode, on a hot day; the temp got really hot.... the Digital temp showed 118 Celsius and I got worried as i have not seen this temp on my bike before. Had a look at the radiator and it is filled with coolant. reservoir is full to the recommended level too.
can anyone help?
Thanks.[/quote]
You didn't mention if the fan came on? It should have just before that temp if I am remembering correctly.

Re: Safe Temperature?
The fan should run at around 100C. If you're seeing 118 I expect the display was flashing to indicate you were starting to overheat.
Waiting for answers re situation (fan running?, sitting in traffic?, etc.)

Re: Safe Temperature?
am i missing something?

no I don't think you are missing anything, the Bird does run hot as previously mentioned (not as hot as the CBR1000RR but that is another story)............. but one thing you don't mention is that the front surface of the rad is it clear? In the UK they clog very quickly and fender extenders are a popular addition (also stops to some extent stones from being thrown up)

I've had it now for 3.5 years. The coolant was replaced last January 2010. before that I think it was replaced December 2008.
would it be a good idea to add another fan? has anyone done this before?

Re: Safe Temperature?
Engine Ice or RedLine Water Wetter will help the cooling a lot.
Watch the temp closely and switch to F instead of C.
As you first ride the temp will rise to about 176 when the thermostat opens.
The temp will fall quickly then build again to 176F and it may repeat drop again.
The temp will now build slowly. Speed will effect the temp. Even a car or bike in front will increase the temp for a given speed. Temp along the road also effects engine temp.
At about 220F the fan comes on and stays on till 214F. That is just above 100C so there should be no fan at that temp. A little throttle in traffic will help fan cooling.
