Hi, All.
After chasing a rough idle, 'fluffy' (sorry) constant-throttle running, and hesitant transition from off to on throttle, for months (carb settings up and down the scale (MAN, am I sick of taking the carbs out?), John Smith, esquire (a.k.a. Jaws Motorcycles) said it was the K&N flowing too much air and upsetting the carbs. Hurgh? How can this be? I have used K&N forever on carb'd and injected bikes, no problems. John sent me a (quite affordable) Hi-Flo paper-element filter (identical to the OEM filter in flow characteristics, fitted, problem gone. Bingo. Happy Gaz.
John said he conducted many air box pressure and flow tests with a variety of air filters and concluded that the 'Bird's air box required a very, very stable air flow.
Wellwhaddayaknow? I bow and scrape to The Wise One from Norfolk!
