Odd sputtering problem

Sold my ST1100 and just purchased my bird. It's a 2001 that in spite of a 1/4 tank of old fuel, during test ride, ran as good as I expected. Brought home and rode 10-15 miles no problems. Stopped and filled with 91 OCT fuel, and within 10-15 miles started getting a noticable sputtering when the throttle was anywhere from 10-25%, doesn't seem to matter what rpm, as soon as the r's level out, it starts chugging and acting like it is misfiring or dropping a plug. Crack the throttle open and it rockets off again.
Did I inherit an electronics problem, or just a combo of bad fuel, something else? The FI light doesn't indicate a fault so not sure what else to look for. One additional item, smells very rich or like raw fuel being pushed out of the exhaust.
Please don't let this sour my first experience.

Re: Odd sputtering problem

Run a couple of tanks of SeaFoam through it, and see if the problem still exists. May have been some crap in the tank that was dislodges when you refilled (or crap fuel from the fill up).

Re: Odd sputtering problem

You may have picked up some water at that fill up. Adding some methyl hydrate may help, but if it were me, I would just drain the tank and fill it with fuel from a different source.

Re: Odd sputtering problem

Ok, what is seafoam? Does it hurt to run injector cleaner through a tank? I definitely suspect the gas, but wanted ideas first.

Sea Foam is about the best stuff you'll ever put in your tank, aside from gasoline. Here: Sea Foam | Home

Re: Odd sputtering problem

check the fuel presseure reg.
Easiest way is lift tank, remove airbox lid and then turn key on and while looking down the intake tubes, cycle the run/stop button from off to on and see if any of the injectors are dribbling when you hear the pump prime the line. If 2+3 (2 middle ones) dribble when the pump pressurises the line, it's time for a new regulator.

Amazon is selling a case of 10 for $39.00. I think that is a good deal.

Re: Odd sputtering problem

Ok, now the problem has gotten worse. Seemed to improve for a day or two and then definitely started missing worse. Now seems like I may have fouled a plug and running horrid. Guess it time for a prffessional.

Re: Odd sputtering problem

Sounds like a fouled plug or dodgy ht lead. Run the Bird on premium fuel and she will reward you for it. Although this wont cure a fouled plug or dodgy lead problem.

Re: Odd sputtering problem

As well as the plugs, check the fuel lines and vacuum hoses for leaks etc

Re: Odd sputtering problem

Ran a can of the seafoam in it, seemed better then started progressively getting worse on the next tank (with additional seafoam). left to right, I lost the third cylinder, pipe is cold (tried the other three hot ones first though). It did have a TFI Techlusions box under the seat, not connected. The box looks to be statndard honda hardware. I will pull the cowls tonight and see if the plug is fouled or what is happening. Since I brought it home, it has only had 91 octane fuel.

Re: Odd sputtering problem

before you start it next, make sure your connected with only the ECU to all electrics it controls, under the tank at your left knee is a multi pin plug, check it & if a power comander or anything else is in series with it,disconnect it,start it by its own ECU/ECM

Re: Odd sputtering problem

Tweet likely nailed it - the diaphragm in the fuel pressure regulator has been compromised. Bad gas and too much ethanol can do it. Lift the tank and check (pull) the vent hoses going to the throttle bodies; if raw fuel runs out (the inner two cylinders are the usual suspects) your FPR (right side, end of the fuel rail) is toast. The good news is that it's easy to replace.

Re: Odd sputtering problem

Ok Tweet and IronMike are the winners. Pulled the vaccuum line while running and fuel was pumping faster there than going in to the injectors. Third cylinder was always the first to go. $60 later and I will be back on the road by Tuesday. Thanks again everyone for the help.
