Couple of engine questions?

1.) I scored a used Exhaust header and muffler off Ebay a couple months ago. Since I have a fuel injected model I can't re-jet the Bird myself. So, I was wondering if anyone in the Alberta, Canada or even western Canada area knows a place I can go or send my computer to be remapped?

2.) I changed my Cam Chain Tensioner last summer hoping it would rid that horrible sound upon startup forever. Much to my chagrin, it still sounds like ball bearings or a bowling alley when I crank it over first thing in the morning but dissipates soon after it starts and warms up. Any thoughts as to what the issue is?

Thanks!

Re: Couple of engine questions?

1: No Idea

2: Possibly Clutch Basket rattle (happens to all BB's), pull the clutch lever in and then start it, keep the clutch lever in until the revs are above 1k and then let it out

Re: Couple of engine questions?

1. Use a power commander and you can adjust the fuelling yourself.(or find a dyno)
2. Prolly as Scrappy said clutch basket rattle. Do the above test..

Good luck!

Re: Couple of engine questions?

1) power commander (PC III usb) is your only option.

2) one some birds that is normal, and nothing to worry about at all.

As above. I'm sure you can find a dyno shop in Calgary or Edmonton.

Re: Couple of engine questions?

I've tried pulling in the clutch upon startup to no avail. The noise comes from the bottom to mid right hand side of the engine opposing the clutch. The noise dissipates in about 2-3 seconds and is non existant when the engine is warm. It only happens on cold starts. It almost seems like its the timing chain or the guides it touches being loose causing the rattling type sound. How often do the chain guides wear out? The motor has 35000km on it now... The guy I bought the bike off of was meticulous about his maintanence. He wouldn't let me take the bike home till I had a small training program from him on what I should do maintanence wise. He was 58 and I left his house feeling I'd made a good purchase even though I probably paid more than what the Bird is worth on paper.

The oil is changed twice per year using Motul Motorcycle oil. I can't remember the grade but I think its fully synthetic 15W/40.

Thanks for all the replies!

Re: Couple of engine questions?

You can put a billet clutch basket in, but get your pocket book out:

Billet Clutch Baskets / Falicon Crankshaft Components, Inc.

Orient Express - Billet Clutch Basket - Honda - CBR 1100xx Blackbird 1997-2003/CNC Machined/Includes Rebuild

Honda Clutches

Re: Couple of engine questions?

O...M....G!!!! That was a lot more cash than I was expecting for a potential problem dollar wise! I told the wife that I better go get the bike this week from storage if the roads are clear enough to start the tear down. How would I know from looking at the clutch basket if it's pooched? Or is this something I should take to a metals inspector and have magnifluxed for cracks?

thanks

Re: Couple of engine questions?

I doubt it's necessary to replace the clutch. Why not change to oil to a semi syth and change out the hydraulic fluids. Motul is a good choice. If it's just a rattle on a cold start up, they all do that. If it doesn't occure on a warm start up and you don't hear anything at 3,000 rpm or so, it just a Honda sound. That's some large dosh to get into the clutch. I have 149,000 kms and no clutch issues, just a rattler when cold. I don't see a response from PartsGuy and a few others so just ride her for awhile and get used to the feel and sound of a BlackBird. imo Did the p.o. wring her out at the drag strip?

Re: Couple of engine questions?

Ok....that sounded a little dinkish, so here's a little softer, more user friendly version.

Your bike is new, and you are fussing over it to much. yes, it makes some odd noises from time to time, but they are all normal, and just get used to them.

Re: Couple of engine questions?

ok, that was a little to soft for my liking, so here's a real mean version.

Hey, stop being a retard and just ride the damn thing. If we say it's ok....then it's ok. Just stop being a big dork, and ride.

Re: Couple of engine questions?

Redneck Red Deerians hit'n the sauce a little early today huh? HA HA!! Ya, I suppose I could be overdoing it but I'm new to this Bird. It's nothing like my previous bikes so just thought I'd ask a few questions for the benefit of doubt.

Re: Couple of engine questions?

When I start my bike at around 0 degrees C or below I get a strange noise that comes and goes while it's idling and stops once the temp comes up a bit. I'm sure it is not crank or rod bearing related, but, I'm suspicious of the balance shaft bearings being out of adjustment.
