Say Al, did they get all those people out of their cars, or are some still camping?
More beer!!
Irishxx, generally we in sw Ontario have better winters than than most of Canada, but these damn big lakes like to drop sudden loads of snow, sometimes we get 2 feet!
And the roads around here suck, closer to Shewie there are more scenic twisty routes, near me the only sweepers are the higway on ramps.

They're all out,some after 30 hrs.About 320 cars,trucks stranded on the 402.Taken to make-shift shelters-community halls etc.
OPP pulling a snowmobile trailer passed me on the 401 then turned north, that was about 5:30,lot of local people used sleds to help out,I know of 1 tractor that brought a news guy in then stuck around to pull out cars. They figure 2 maybe 3 days to get the vehicles out.
I guess "state of emergency" and "stay off the roads" didn't apply to those folks.

As Partsguy said, occasionally the lakes conspire to throw a mass of water vapour into the air which, in winter conditions, returns as snow. In this case, about 70cms of snow in a matter of hours.
If you look at South-Western Ontario on a map, you will see that it is wedged (literally) into the Great Lakes (actually, they are large enough to be called inland seas). It is virtually surrounded by water, and LOTS of it. This makes for interesting weather at times, although what they are currently experiencing is beyond the norm.
Ironically, the maritime provinces which are much farther north and, by rights, should be the ones getting all the snow, are getting flooded in torrential rainstorms.
I'm going to move these last posts to another thread so we can stop ripping Sean's.
