| GPS and Radar Detector
I recently mounted a couple of ram mounts on the clutch and brake reservoirs and pulled the RD and GPS out of the truck and mounted them up. I ran the wires directly from the battery up the left frame rail along and existing wire bundle, came out near the clutch line and back up to each device. After one days ride, I realized that the direct wiring was a no go as it pulls the surface charge off the battery and makes the bike difficult to start. A problem which I have never had. Back to radio shack for few options. I usually don't like to splice but I made an exception and came off the third fuse link under the fuse box, negative straight to battery. This configuration kills everything except starting function and is the same circuit for the rear light. Keep in mind these are the economy level units. The first to get upgraded will be the RD for remote detection capability whether it be a squealer or a indicator in the helmet. The GPS is a Nuvi 350 that can be had for about $120 now. I use it for upcoming turns and it's a quicker glance for mph. Another useful aspect that I didn't think about was that if you drill down and get fairly granular with your display, you get an indication of the upcoming curves. I ride Fort Mountain regularly and for the most part it's a good run. But there are a few places where I thought I was going to suck the seat into my ass because I came in way too hot. Now I can just glance down and say "here's one" and be ready for it. There's only about 5 or 6 of these, one of them being due west leaving the lookout but to know it's coming keeps me inside of my double yellow, which is always a good thing. Just keep in mind that this is a test scenario. It seems to be working for now. I may add some wire loom cover to the twin cables especially by the left coil next time the tank is up, but so far so good. At first I thought it was going to be a little busy for display purposes but it is easy to adapt too. You can still see your tach needle and whether or not your up on 7 – 8k, have to glance a little for temp and fuel but I check these when I stop at a light anyway. The radar detector is a Cobra 9500. I had it velcroed to my tank bag to test and of course you can't hear it due to wind and iPod, but I couldn't see it either because it was too close to me. Having it on the clutch stem it sits under the screen and the sound reflects off of the cone and volume is a little better but not great. I can certainly see the lights, so providing it's not too bright, I can at least see if I'm getting painted. If I'm at this point I've already backed off the throttle and probably nudging the front brake. Got my eyes on the 8500 but it's about $300 so it's on the list. Any changes I’ll advise. Hth--- There's a 3 amp fuse in that fuse link tapping off the fuse block. I also picked up an adapter to run off my battery tender connector to run a line to charge the iPhone in the tank bag. Real nice kit from Radio shack and the only one with SAE connectors in the store. Last edited by smurf211; 07-04-2009 at 9:49 AM. | ||

Gee, Steve, you don't have too far to go before Leftlaner comes knocking on your door for advice.

My 9500i is also hardwired on a stem mount. I unplug it when I turn bike off. I have charged my phone with the cord which is like a telephone plug in. Not sure where I'd put the gps, if I had one.

As mentioned in another thread...I ran a Gilsson power adapter cord (via a relay) off the bikes battery to power my Garmin Nuvi 260W GPS. After more then a weeks running there were no bike starting issues at all. This set up is only a GPS battery charging circuit actually, which the GPS unit draws on as needed. With a direct to the bikes battery connection, if the bike is not running..and you have not turned off your accerories then they continue to draw power. My relay above is only energized when the bikes key is in the run position so there is no way to leave the GPS power feed cable energized from the bikes power when the key is off. Tony
