| Noise Suppression for Aux Equip
I've fitted a Garmin Nuvi 310 to the bike, I've got an issue when I use the 12v power adapter for it. I get a constant buzz (low level - but annoying enough - not ignition pulse, but I do get that too!). When the Nuvi is running on internal power - nil noise. (ie. unplug the adapter) I've run the power for the adapter from the bikes indicator cct (which also feeds my Autocomm system). I'm wondering if one of these baby's would solve my problem?? Laird Technologies NS1535 at TheFind.com - search, discover and compare prices or here; Engine Noise Filters - Noise Suppressor, 15A Any suggestions will be helpful

im not sure about low pitch noise, but i know in my car my subwoofers let out a high pitch buzz if i don't have a magnetic shield under the firewall... it would crawl to even higher pitch with the RPM's... something about magnatism created by the engine interfereing with the radio/electrical system... i have my zumo hardwired and i have nil problems... (of course i cant listen to music on internal battery power tho.. that sucks)

Either choice should work to block the alternator's field whine.

When I installed my TomTom Rider, I tapped the power line to the rear lights (the running light, not the brake light). That way the power supply is controlled by the ignition switch - less chance of a flat battery by accidentally leaving the unit turned on.

If you never leave it connected to the bike, (so no chance of it draining the battery), you could try connecting directly to the battery & see if that fixes the noise. Sometimes being direct from the battery, it acts sufficiently as a capacitor to smooth the ripple out below the threshold that causes audible noise.

I've run the power for the adapter from the bikes indicator cct, do you mean circuit? I don't understand this term. Where are you tapping your voltage from? I'm curious because I just setup a couple of ram mounts for my radar detector and my Nuvi also. Haven't been out to test ride yet though. I ran mine straight from the battery and ran the two cables down the left side facing forward along the existing wire harness. I had to route up by the clutch line because I didn't have enough cable to go all the way into the front and back to the steering stem.. It's all experimental for now. I was also a little concened getting by the left coil. Tie wrapped everything. It's all economy level but it's a start. The GPS would have helped me a few times on some trips I've taken and I had the radar detector was test velcroed on the tank bag but I couldn't see it much less hear it (ipod). // sm | |

Basically I've run my leads down the same way, from the rear underseat, up the left side following the clutch hydraulic lines and tie wrapped with some lee way for steering movement. Possibly I'm picking up noise of the coils. In any case I'm gunna try one of these filters or similar I've pointed out - it sounds like I'm on the ball. I'll post further findings later.

I built a pig tail from a battery tender rig that I had left over, actually, two of them. They both have the 3 amp fuses in them. I'm running straight from the battery. I manually turn off the RD but leave the GPS connected for re charging when I get home through the battery tender. Jury is still out on this config. Will advise. // sm

Fitted the filter, has reduced all the clicking type noises - indicator, brake etc. Still a low level buzz but much reduced in dB. I'm happy with the result. I ended up fitting a 5amp rated inline filter from the local electronics store for $15AUD. To fit: just cut the 12v line I fitted from the indicator/stop/horn circuit and placed in line - soldering both ends and taping up with self healing rubber tape. The earth line I fitted directly to the battery terminal.
