My Acumen Digital Gear Indicator

I picked up my Bird today after the service and installation of the GI. First impressions, very cool. On the left side of the dash next to the turn signal arrow. Very clean install, it appears to float with no visible wires. They are tucked away in a little gap at the top of the dash. Bright blue housed in a gold square, very visible in bright sunlight. Same colour blue as the highbeam light. When in neutral it "blinks" blue, seems to flash in a circular motion. Bike needs to be at 1,000-1,500 rpm to indicate what gear, as when stoped but in gear waiting for a light, traffic, stop sign. Cycles through first(1) through sixth(6) no problems. If I shift down too quickly it takes a sec or so to find 1st, or second. It works perfectly and I'm happy with it. Yes, it's a trick farkle and perhaps not necessary but sometimes I'm not sure what gear I'm in. It might have looked tricker in red in an anodized red housing to match the bar ends and Pazzo levers in anodized red. It cost $60 to be installed.

Yes, I know, this thread is worthless without a pic. I'll attempt to take some pics, day and night. I have to break in the new P2s. For anyone who is experiencing grief with their GI from Acumen, go back to the drawing board, it should work perfectly. Cheers, CB

Re: My Acumen Digital Gear Indicator

I've seen that install in the tac face. It is cool but for sure I couldn't do it or fund it. I think, all things being equal, it is in the best location simply because the wires are hidden and there was no drilling. I just have to make sure I don't fixate on it when I'm riding. lol On that new Bird/FVR is should be oem. I'm certain that for a skillfull peep the dash can be removed and a square cut out and it installed as such. With "cool blue" gages it would look excellent. I was also tempted with white but it's sold out. I'm going to have to take a night ride to test the new high beam hid as well. Better still just before sunrise. I hate night riding. Pics, omg, how the H'' do I figure that out. There must be a simple way to do it. For a ludite that is.

I would be interested in seeing that done from a purely academic standpoint. I considered, albeit briefly, trying it there, but it doesn't easily lend itself to a flushmount installation and I didn't want to sacrifice my dash face to an experiment.

I'll get a couple of pics of my location and stick them up here for ya, Poundy.

Okay, here ya go.

Thanks shewie I think that's the way I will go. Not many options with the analogue gauges

Re: My Acumen Digital Gear Indicator

I don't have the volt measuring do da so mine is next to the left turn signal. Does your gear indicator function as mine? ie In neutral the light spins untill your in gear at least 1,000 rpm or so.

Re: My Acumen Digital Gear Indicator

No, I have three options for the neutral display: 0, N, or n. The indicator will do the 'spin hunt' if I hold the clutch in while in gear, but it is tapped into the neutral light on the dash, so it always knows when I'm in neutral.

Re: My Acumen Digital Gear Indicator

DW01, I'd like to see a pic of your install. Don't you have to zip tie the wires quite a way till they get to under the dash, or where ever?

well since i bought the wiring harness with it, there was an excess of wires so i just zip tied them together and to another wire to keep it from flopping around... other then that it was the easiest install ive ever done (other then trying to waterproofing the harness with electrical tape)
oh and i took the nose cone completely off to do the install.... i don't think im going to take the nose cone off again unless i have to, cuz now cracks are starting to appear where i didn't know exactly how to take it off...

Re: My Acumen Digital Gear Indicator

I think the nose cone came off of my Bird b/c hid high beam also had to be installed. Post a pic, I'm curious as to how it looks. I'll attempt to do the same.

Re: My Acumen Digital Gear Indicator

Not the one I was thinking of but this does give you an idea of what the acumen indicator would look like in the tacho. (the accumen is smaller so it should look a little better IMHO)
