| Eelctrical Starting Issues, please help....
Fixed a fuel issue recently and while trying to get the bike to stay running, all of a sudden now when you turn the key, the fuel pump does not come on for that few seconds and the FI light does not go out like i tused to when it is ready to start. The fuel pump has been checked as well as all fuses I could find. It is like it is not getting the signal to the fuel cut off relay that we want to start the bike. I have checked the relay and it seems to be fine, the only thing is when I try to cut out the fuel cut off relay by jumping the connection, the fuel pump does not come on, when I Jump the brown wire to the batt, it does come on. Any suggestions????

Oh boy. Did you, at any time, jump anything other than the brown wire? Like, say, the brown/black wire? Smurf211 has a thread or two regarding this: Fuel system flow check and potential ECM damage.

No, the fuel pump just stopped coming on at start up in the middle of trying to start it and keep it started. Almost like a fuse burnt out or something but I checked the main fuse, the FI fuse and the fueses in the box. Am I missing somethinng?

Well, throw as much info up here about the bike and it's behaviour as you can and let everyone noodle on it.

Is it possible that the kill switch is stuck on off

I pulled the engine cut off relay and tested while clicking the kill switch and it seems to be working properly. I am going to retest everything and see what happens, I guess.

The kill switch would be my first port of call followed by the tilt sensor (take it off its mounting and by tilting it you can hear it working!) Loom fix done? |

How do you check the kill switch? I think I checked it properly. I checked the wires coming from it to the stop relay and the juice is getting there, then I checked it from the B/W wire to the fuel cut off relay and the juice is getting there, but it is not getting to the fuel pump. Is there supposed to be voltage coming into the fuel cut off relay from the computer along the Br/Bl wire to allow the juice to connect to the pump???..... Thought I would check the spark plugs for spark....No spark on any of them..?>?>????? Have no idea what the issue could be now. ANy suggestions??? Last edited by Shekinah999; 06-25-2009 at 7:25 PM. |

When I had my ECM problem, I could bypass the fuel stop relay and supply continuous 12 vdc to the fuel pump. It would start right up. There was a suggestion to leave the jumper to ride it but I wasn't stranded anywhere. It sounds like you may have two separate problems, fuel and ignition. Is the ECM throwing any codes to the FI light? There is a flow chart for verifying the fuel system for both pressure and flow. There is also a procedure for no spark. Divide and conquer as they say. hth -smurf

i had the same problem the fuel pump not cutting on when the key turned. run a seperate ground wire from the ECM(green wire on black connector) to the fuel pump ground wire. fixed my electrical problem.

So here is the latest. A full run down of the issue. Had the bike in storage for a couple months. Took it out and the battery was dead, replaced the battery and ran fine. The bike quit on me after getting the tank filled up. It was on empty. After filling it, I rode about 3 or 4 miles and then the bike stalled like it ran out of gas. I was able to start it right up and then it would die in a matter of about 10 seconds. I thought maybe this was due to a clogged fuel filter. I tested the pump and it worked fine. I checked the filter and it was fine. I then thought maybe bad gas, so I emptied tank and got new gas and then it still would only run for a few seconds and then die. Then all of a sudden, when I went to try to start it after trying to troubleshoot it, the pump quit cycling on and the FI light would not go out. I think I checked the kill switch properly. The relay switches when the switch is turned to on. I checked out all the relays and what I found is that the power is not being let through the fuel cut off relay due to a signal being sent from the ecm through the brown and black wire to the relay. The bike will turn over but will not fire. There is also not spark getting to the plugs. My thought is that some sensor or something has cut the ignition to the bike. I checked the BAS and it seems to test out right as far as I know. What I did was tilt the BAS and you can hear the stop engine relay click and open up. Where do I go from here? I am thinking it has to be something simple, hopefully... Couple more things. I also did the FI light fix which had no effect on the issue. Also, when you click the kill switch to on, there is a clicking noice which I think I tracked down to the Map Sensor or atleast in that area. If you leave the switch on, the clicking stops after a while and it is hard to pinpoint. I tried to reset the ecu through the connector in the back but the FI light will not flash or anything, just stays lit. Bout ready to take to stealership but funds are tight. Please Help. |
