| Ignition barrel woes
OK so I have a hornet 900 not a CBR but for some reason this morning the ignition key won't turn in the barrel. I did get it to work once, but not again since. I've tried the spare key, but to no avail. Does anyone know if it's possibly to replace just the barrel leaving the HISS etc in place? I have both keys and there's nothing wrong with the HISS, I just can't turn the key!! Help!!! Oh and I've tried WD40 but that didn't help. It's a 2003 bike, in mint condition. | |

OK, 1st perhaps you're on the wrong forum. 2nd you might introduce yourself. 3rd, I haven't a clue.

Did you try turning or jiggling the bars simultaneously?

I may be a bit expensive to either have a barrel replaced and get a locksmith to rework the mechanism to suit your key, or to get a new barrel/key/ecu and start from scratch. When the key worked the final time, was it tight or did it feel "normal"? Hello, BTW.

It never felt any different until the morning when it wouldn't work at all. It's never been even remotely sticky, then suddenly won't work at all. I'm going to try tapping the underneath gently with a screwdriver to see if something needs knocking back into place. Screwdriver didn't work, nor did the oil I squirted in there last night. Any more ideas? A few people in various different forums have said it's happened to them before but nobody has said they've had to change the barrel which is good, but that it just seemed to start working again. Has anyone had it not start working again? (so I can prepare myself for the worst if necessary!) Last edited by craptiger; 06-19-2009 at 3:04 AM. Reason: update |

The HISS is in the black plastic surround & is separate to the ignition barrel, from memory. So you could probably remove the barrel & take to locksmith & get it fixed, or just try a suitable lubricant, (most recommend a little graphite powder), as you probably have a stuck pin in the tumbler. (Just my guess.)
