| Reg / Rec, possible cause of failure.
I've looked through the (many) other posts on this issue and not seen this, so..... Mine gave the first indications of trouble last Sunday, hot day, lights on trapped in a motorway tailback for a while. Got home, went to restart, starter barely turning over. Battery voltage at 12.2 V. Charged up fine when cooled down, all voltages normal. Took a look at the reg unit last night. The unit is bolted to a fairly substantial heatsink (the subframe) BUT, it is bolted to a PAINTED section of plate. This will definitely hinder the cooling process of the reg unit. I have scraped back the paint to bare metal under the reg mounting surface and have smeared heat sink compound onto the metal surfaces of frame and reg unit. This greatly aids the transfer of heat from the reg unit to the metal of the subframe. Heat sink compound is readily available from Maplins or Radio Shack (do they still exist) or even your local computer shop. I would recomend that everyone do this as a matter of normal maintenance, believe me, it will make a difference. | |

Have you checked the inside condition of the 6 pin plug?

I've run through all the checks. Everything looks good. But, this is an original '97/98 carbed type reg/rec and is is probably showing the first signs of failure. I have re-mounted it with heat sink compound and that certainly does pass heat far more efficiently. I'll take a look at my Fireblade RRX reg/rec too, they certainly seem very similar, as does the rest of the electrical system. I've never had the slightest indication of any problems with the RRX electrical sytem and that is rapidly heading towards 40,000+ miles. I have noticed that the 'blades reg/rec bolts directly to an alloy subframe and that it is open to air flow, rather than being tucked deep inside the seat fairing on the 'Bird. I'll report more after the weekend. Cheers |
