| Dash conversion...
Has anyone here done or heard of anyone doing a conversion from the analog instrument panel to the newer digital dash? Seeing that I have to replace my entire upper fairing and everything associated with it, I think I want to go digital. Thanks in advance.

I think you would have better luck goiing digital with a FI 99 model because of the wiring harness. I dont know just thinking out loud ![]() |

Yes, it can be done. I've seen a local shop do it, and everything works (even the temperature reading!). For it to work you must also have the top part of the wiring-loom. According to the shop-owner there is no major rewiring needed.... He did it in less than an hour....... |

HELVET: Really? How can I get in contact with this person, because dropping my bike off at his shop is out of the question... Or if he can put togeather a how to and post it on the board, that would be graet. There may be some other folks out there who want to do it! Obviously I'm not the first. Thank you!

| Re: Dash conversion... Well I bought my "Project Bird" a couple of weeks ago(I have another thead on here). It has High front end damage, the rest of the bike looks good. I will have to replace almost everthing up front to get it rideable. Well, the dash was destroyed in the crash. Seeing I'm going to have to get a whole new dash, I figure this would be a good time to in my opinion upgrade to the digital dash. I just like the looks of it and it would make my 97XX a little different than others. That's just my thing. The previous owner did a lot to it, most of it I like. So as I see my vision of it start to pan out...I just want it to be a little unusual. Including the dash!

Thank you. I have not bought the dash yet, so this is the perfect time to get all the info I may need. If you wanna get rid of that dash of yours....

| Re: Dash conversion... lyrixxx, You might want to think about a digital speedometer with these points in mind: Reading and understanding the numbers seems to take an additional mental step that should be devoted to the road. I don’t find the digital unit is as intuitive as an analog display that one is familiar with*. Seems to take more time to mentally record the numbers and integrate that into something that makes sense. A good example is found in large trucks where all the analog gauges are calibrated to read straight up when a measured parameter is in the normal range. A quick glance will tell the operator if all systems are normal, digital gauging would require reading and mentally integrating a whole bunch of numbers and reaching a conclusion about each one. ?? For sure though; the digital displays are subject to being washed out in bright sunlight. * I have three Honda CBXs with analog displays; the 79 speedo goes to 140 while the 82s go only to 85. There, the easy quick sense of speed is complicated by the fact needle position for a given speed is not the same on all bikes – straight up on the 79 is about 80 MPH is while straight up on the 82s is about 45. Anyway those are my thoughts. Mike

Frank, "Helvet", is in the Netherlands. Rather not local to Edwards, I think. Keep plugging, though. If I remember correctly, someone in one or the other of the North American groups has done it, I just can't remember who.

I have had a 97 and a 99 and after owning an 01 I actuall prefer the early inst. layout. The way I understand it the 2 dashes use different plug connectors, I will have to give this a little more thought |
