Re: Poll: who had a stator that failed?

Not a problem with the alternator, but I had to replace the R/R (part# 31600-MY305 = O&M with fins) and the battery.

This hapened two weeks after boosting up a died batery from a friend´s motorcycle during a ride. I believe I do it wrong keep running my engine when he was trying to start his old CB-750 F1.

My BB is a '97 and has only 13,600 miles on it.

Re: Poll: who had a stator that failed?

'99 FI
Estimated 50,000 (clocks buggered)
Failed around 10 months ago - quoted 24,000 Baht (close on USD 700 now, not sure how much then, but too much.)
Rewound at about 1/4 of that price - no probs since. (I hope.)

2000, 41K and still the original stator... I have replaced the R/R with an OEM unit from a 2001 though...

You should have had another poll along side with if your reg has failed.

Re: Poll: who had a stator that failed?

'98 with 40,000km and stator is ok. This said, the original R/R recently died (replaced it with the new OEM part) and all now looks ok - battery is charging well. Not running any aftermarket accessories on electrical system.

Re: Poll: who had a stator that failed?

I think I kicked this issue off a while ago but it would appear that models after '99 are less prone to Stator failure.

When mine s##t itself it was less than 20Kms from home - a trailer job.
A couple of months previously we rode from Newcastle to the Oz GP at Phillip Island and back across the snow country - 'glass half full'

Cheers

Re: Poll: who had a stator that failed?

Mate, find another "Mechanic'.

A multimeter should show 14.2V pumping while the shows in action. Anything less its Stator time.

When the stator wears to a point that it cannot provide the correct volts, the complete computer controls go haywire bigtime and quick!

Luckily I was 20Kms from home when mine went.

Re: Poll: who had a stator that failed?

so is consensus that most have gone for a rewind or an aftermarket part say from Ricks Stators. I ask cause today I pulled the plug to my rectifier and 3 of the contacts are all blackened and the plastic housing melted. Looks as though I caught in time. I have a rectifier to replace with I got off the forum here it is from RM stator this model below
Honda - Regulator Rectifier - Super Duty for HONDA CBR 1100 XX Blackbird - CBR 1100 XX BLACKBIRD - Motorcycles - RM Stator / Stator, CDI Box, Regulator Rectifier

I am wondering if I should also replace the stator at same time or perhaps just go rectifier and test the voltage for 14.2 current, and if it is fine just leave as is.

I am looking at a stator from Ricks Stator eBay Motors: Honda CBR1100XX Black Bird 1997-1998 Ricks Stator (item 350173438943 end time Apr-02-09 08:02:30 PDT)=

I have no clue what a rewind would cost and am looking for other options or suggections from those that have replaced. I will not go OEM if it is some outrageous price of 400-600ca like it sounds

Re: Poll: who had a stator that failed?

My bros 03 failed (he thinks) so he took one off my old engine (another 03) and put it on his bike. Long story short it didn't work. He's also replaced his reg/rectifier but that's another story. When he tried it with my old stator and turned the key the sound you hear with the FI wasn't there. He's bringing it to the dealership a week from next Tuesday to have it diagnosed. In the meantime anybody got any ideas? For what its worth the bike has highmiles (50,000) and high output headlights. It's regularly maintained with fully synthetic oil.

Re: Poll: who had a stator that failed?

Cisco, is that why we aren't riding this weekend? Repeating myself, my stator failed at around 60 odd thousand kms. I replaced it with OEM plus it took the battery with it. I didn't replace the R&R till approx 130,000 kms. OEM. Yes, oem is pricy but for electrical that's my choice. I'd have to dig to find what I paid for my stator however the dealer gives me deep discounts respecting the high amount of $'s I spend there. I also hate to admit it but I cleaned out the storage and gave the r&r away. I have 137,100 kms as of yesterday and I keep her on a battery tender even when I only ride weekends. I also have hids, and a 9500i hardwired to the battery. I'm no expert but from what I have read from experts on this forum start at the beginning with a volt meter and a Hanes manual. Do a search for electrical gremlins. I just bought a digital gear indicator from Acumen and I might have bought the volmetre combination. I recommend both, if you have the dosh as they are not cheap. Good luck with your issues. Jaws sells electrical parts.

2K
Just lost mine at 36K the windings were starting to short through the insulation. The only way I found it was using Electrosports T/S sheet. Put in one of thier higher output stators and so far it is working great.

Re: Poll: who had a stator that failed?

1999, has not failed. 56,800 miles.

Replaced the battery this month, a Yuasa maint-free. I believe it was eight years old(!), still had some life left though sounded a bit tired. I have no records on ever replacing the battery, though I might have done so right after purchase, early 2001 (bought used).

All-hail trickle chargers! When the bike sits more than a week, it's on one.

Ran through the PDF step-by-step checklist yesterday, when I did my peremptory strike on the battery. Everything is within-spec. I have seldom run farkles on this bike, other than a Garmin GPS and (rarely) heated vest and glove.

Reg/Rect connections looked good (non-fried).

So far, so good.

Re: Poll: who had a stator that failed?

Mine went bad on my 91 BB, and it only had 1996 miles on it. Not sure what happened but it was bad when I brought it from the dealer. It took them about 3 tries before they got it figured out. It has been fine since then with no other problems.

Re: Poll: who had a stator that failed?

Mine failed on my '99. Battery wouldn't charge & I had to jump start it for the 100K ride to the dealer to get it fixed. Got a bit over half way there before it died completely, so she got a ride on a trailer for the rest of the way.

Bike was about 3 weeks out of warranty but the dealer did the right thing, backdated the invoice for the job & got it replaced for free.

That was 6 years ago & the old girl hasn't missed a beat since.

Yeh mate, since 'The Stator Incident' my '99 is as new.
I don't look at speedo's nor Tacho's when she's on but on a "safe, controlled situation", a mate on an MV312RF4 followed me up to 280ish (kph for the America's bretheren) and we both agreed that was fast enough outside of Bonneville.

Cheers

The OEM Honda replacement is more expensive but it is a much better unit than aftermarket recons.

Agree totally re OME Stator is the way to go. Bulletproof and most importantly, piece of mind. A Stator on the way out followed by a dead Bird in the middle of buggery isn't one of my best experiences

Cheers

Wait untill you need to replace it. They are too expensive to change if not required.

Re: Poll: who had a stator that failed?

I feel you on that. I plan on 3500 mile run in June and i just dont want to get caught out there.

If i had the part numbers, maybe i will buy the parts to keep, just in case.
