met up with Adam, beondwacko, this morning and ride down to Homestead Motor Speedway to watch the CCS Motorcycle Races and also meet Mike, Chaserkeywest. Went to fire the Bird up and it was completely dead !! First for me. Jumped off my Truck and She fired right up but the Bel RX65 radar detector was flashing "High Voltage" so looked at my taillights and they were flashing also !!! Adam figured the regulator/rectifier was going out so we shut it down immediately to prevent cooking the battery. What is the best way to test ? I will be bringing home a voltmeter from work tomorrow but I am not sure what and where to take readings and what I am looking for. Read right off the battery ? Any help is appreciated. By the way I did make it to Homestead but I rode the MZ660 Super Motard instead. About 60 miles each way. Can you say Monkey Butt !!  | ||

John, just check your voltage at the battery. That will tell you where else you need to test. If its too high, you need a regulator. If its too low, you have other testing to do. It would help if you had a full charge on your battery first. I thought the BEL had a numerical readout, not just a warning signal? |

Thanks The tender is on it now The Bel had no numerical readout, just flashing the text "High Voltage" for about 5 seconds then shut down. Shut off the Bird and moved the Bel to the truck and it worked fine again in the truck. Will check voltage with a meter on a full charged battery tonight, thanks. Guess I am looking for a regulator now at the best price ! |

OK here is the latest........more help needed. After leaving the battery on trickle charge for 13 hours now I measured the voltage and it reads 5.5volts with the key turned off. The charger has an LED light that says "charged" when it is on slow trickle and another LED that says "charging" when charging up. The "Charged" LED is lit but the battery says it has only 5.5volts ! I figure the battery is dead. I have a regulator on order that will be here Friday hopefully, from Honda. Can someone tell me off the top of their head what the Champion or Yuase(sp?) battery replacement part number is for a 2001 Bird ? Gonna run out and buy one tonight if possible and check it tomorrow after trickle charging again all night . Thanks John |

Trust me.... get a Westco battery, and start living the Good Life...  This one: WestCo Battery - 12V12A-BS These are maintenance-free AGM batteries (Absorbed Glass Mat), and they are outstanding. |

Hello, I'm new to the board and had a couple of questions about the charging systems on the Blackbird. I'm looking at a 1998 BB and the owner said it would not charge the battery, I was wondering if there was a problem with the charging system on these bikes I should be aware of. I have and use the flow chart that is listed on this thread, and will get into the diagnostics when I get home this afternoon. Thanks in advance for any input. Ben |

John: Mo' powah here: You can use the YTZ14S, 230CC. The height is 4 3/8 which is a little shorter than the YTX12. Ben: No real problems except the Regulator/Rectifier. If you're buying a second hand 'bird, and they all are in North America now, I'd just spend the $80.00 and buy a aftermarket or R1 R/R and figure it in to the price of the bike. The Honda factory R/Rs on a number of the higher end sportbikes suck bad. (The short explanation is they don't heat sink very well. They don't sit entirely flush against the subframe, and they don't have cooling fins) Other than that, the system on the 'bird in the earlier models has a lower output stator, which limits what accessories you can put on it- the gentleman above- Warchild- probably has found the absolute limits of the electrical systems on both the early and later models of the 'bird, and has given the rest of us the benefit of his knowledge, however, you can only do so much where electrical extras are concerned.

If you have a meter, and some knowledge, you can even check the stator outputs. The reg/rectifier is the typical failure. Stators are rare, but happen. The guide in the link works for most bikes. Also the bike struggles to charge under 1500 rpm. If the bike you are looking at has sat a long time, or is just warmed up,and not ridden, it may not be keeping the battery up. Check it out, get the owner to knock off the cost of the parts and buy her. They are great bikes. | |

redxxrdr, I found the problem pretty quick, the rectifier/regulater is fried, but the bike has been idle for 2 years so getting it cranked was an ordeal. I'll be asking a lot of questions later on the appropiate forum as I should have started a new thread instead of hijacking this one. Later Ben |

Anyone have a picture of the R/R and its location in the bike? How about: "How to replace a R/R"....definately disconnect the battery first, non-power limited circuits can give quite a flash! XLER8 |
