Hey guys... just doing some late night work, and had a question for anyone out there who could provide some insite.

I have a '97 XX, and my friend has a 2000 VFR... which has had the stock handlebars removed so that he may install some heli-bars. As I understand, some of you out there have taken these VFR handlebars and installed them onto your birds (removing the stock bars first of course)... providing more height position than what was previously there with the stock bars.

Is this correct?... and have there been fitting issues involved with this so-described upgrade?

Would like some responses before gutting my bird to test it out. Time spent will be worth it.. provided they work, and prove to be an upgrade like I hear, otherwise I'll keep my stock bars thank you very much.

I've done this on my bike. If you do a search you will find some excellent information on a lot of different options for risers along with a post that has instructions on installation of the VFRs clip ons. The stock set up was fine for me. I decided to do it to more closely match the position that I have on my 1988 CBR1000F Hurricane. The installation is easy but you need to cut a tab on the master cylinder to rotate the cables. The entire installation took me about an hour maybe an hour and a half. I did use a dremel to cut the tab. It went on great. They look stock on the bike. They do raise the bars up a bit and the angle brings them back a bit. I actually feel that the bike handles better with these or maybe its just the way that they feel to me. Seems like a better leverage position so it makes everything easier when it comes time to apply some pressure to the bars. If you have any problems finding the instructions or the posts on risers let me know.

Hi jackbirdxx,
I'm not 100% about this but I don't think that '98-'01 41mm VFR bars will fit your 43mm XX forks. You need to get a set of '02 to present day 43mm VFR bars. You could try bar risers, proberbly a little less hassle to buy and to fit and there's no cutting involved. Good luck with it. WOL

bars

Go to the post by DrDyno and there is a link that describes the installation. Its easy and the cutting is very minor and doesn't affect anything. A child could do it. WOL is correct and you do need 02 and up VFR clip ons. 43mm forks on the BB and the VFR converted to that size with the vtech engine in 02. I found a set on ebay for mine. Im not sure if you have to do any cutting with the other options but I would think that you might. Raising the bars up changes the angle slightly of the of the cable runs off the clutch and brake master cylinder. You are basically cutting the tabs that hold those cables in place so that you can rotate the cable slightly and get the angle needed. I used a dremel but you could use a hack saw. The link describes some other options. Helvet has a post with video of some of the different options so you can see what they look like. I considered risers but wanted a stock look so I went with the VFR clip ons.

Thanks guys... I think I'll be happy with my own bars. Never had any real issues, other than on the palms at times but... just overthinking small issues like this - instead of throwing a leg over my bike and riding.
