its easy to put a few hundred here few hundred there when you figure it took me over a year to complete it and the big check from the insurance company helped. My bike was vandalized and insurance paid out nicely and didnt total the bike!!!

Re: Carbon Fiber group buy?

cbrbear,

Could you tell me, your steering damper, is that a 'bird fitment?

Secondly, as you're evidently the authority on Japanese kit, do you know of anyone still manufacturing the TSR-type caliper brackets?

Many thanks!

Wreckless.

The damper is a standard scott/ohlins radial style damper, and the mounting bracket is made by BRG BRG Motorcycle Racing Dyno Services and requires drilling into the frame and the upper triple clamp.

As far as the TSR type caliper brackets I have no idea but I can ask if anyone in Japan would know if they are still made and how/where to get them from.

Thanks, that'd be very helpful! I suspect I might have to get some made, but I want to exhaust all possibilities first.

Carbon Fiber group buy. I found a guy re: carbon fiber, BUT, not much demand for XX Bird's, but he said if a group got together to buy/he'd consider setting up. AE Carbon.com outa AZ, his name George. Just passing it along.

Re: Carbon Fiber group buy?

Dunno. My original inquiry to him was answered with he'd have set up cost (making molds etc.) and then the pcs /partz chg. So no cost given...guess "we'd" have to contact him with numbers (and then say Yay or Nay). AE Carbon.com was outa AZ. Found him on cbr extreme forum/vendor list (only vendor listed)...he also had a bike shown with complete carbon fiber body kit-fer sale.

Re: Carbon Fiber group buy?

I dont think you will find anyone in here with deep enough pockets or even willing to spend the dough. I am sure its going to cost a few large bills to make an entire kit and I am not talking hundred dollar bills. I know from experience of just having a mold made and a carbon fiber inner v pannel was almost 500 bucks and reproduction of each piece is about 200 so to sell it for less than 300 a piece is taking a loss... so figure cheapest piece is 300, then there is upper, each lower, tail section, and then the misc parts you got yourself a 2000 dollar carbon fiber bill.

Re: Carbon Fiber group buy?

Just popped in to look on his site...as my original message and return email are gone. Site, shows only a few pcs. I.E. Tail section for Honda CBR900RR at $450.00. So problee is cost prohibitive, my pockets ain't very deep.

Other info...Kawloon, Hong Kong, had entire body kit (available in three colors) with decals at $499. I'm sure that there would be shipping on top of that. I wasn't too confident about sending out $ to Hong Kong and hoping that the parts would actually arrive. Some other folks I know and their correspondance re: Hong Kong and pcs/partz-felt that manufacturing actually on mainland China, and fit wasn't quite right (wasn't bike stuff).

Carbon fiber may just be outa reach as you said. Just using his $450 price for the tail pc. already an existing product.

I'm still looking at the parts for my bike. My thinking is that I'd rather replace the damaged with new/correct parts, but there's that cost thing again. Repair isn't off the grid yet. Still thinking out what exactly I can do. Don't know of anyone in my area that actually does 'body work' on bikes.

So that's why I was curious about group buy thing. If there was a discount for a lotsa folks ante'ing up.

Ain't trying to be a cheap sob, but really don't need to lay out alot of cash.

Re: Carbon Fiber group buy?

Well I tried a group buy for some relatively in expensive carbon accent parts and it went no where... The hong kong body kits are nice I bought one for my 900RR and my friends 600RR. from 5 feet its awesome, from up close its ok not OEM quality but still good looking!

Re: Carbon Fiber group buy?

Thanks for that input. I had only seen the color pics and the red was well, red, but didn't look quite right in the photo. But if I went with the Kawloon bits, it woulda been the whole body kit and then the color would match at least. Guess maybe I'll sneak up on OEM. Got the decal already ($20 something). Parts guy said he'd work with me on partz deal...even he was shocked at the tank price. So looks like a winter project fer sure.

Re: Carbon Fiber group buy?

CBRBear, I'm just up the road from you. If you can get OEM @ those prices, I'd rethink my getting the hong kong set. Can I ask you about getting serious about the upper and both lowers in 1st quarter of 2009?

Hugger would be great. Just took a look under the rear after a 1500km ride - yuck!! I hate to think what all the road grime is doing to the electrics and the rear shock!

Re: Carbon Fiber group buy?

If I could afford them, I would opt for some carbon fibre wheels, not only would they look great, there would be a significant weight reduction and handling improvement, I recently read a story where a CBR1000r had them fitted and the difference was very noticable.

Re: Carbon Fiber group buy?

Carbon fiber wheels would be cool!

A newbie to the site mentioned that he had carbon fiber exhaust system...I thought he meant he had carbon fiber pipes...he mentioned a weight reduction of about 30...that is alot of weight and a lot of money..

Re: Carbon Fiber group buy?

The weight reduction is with a full system and removing the center stand. Have a look at the Jan. '09 edition of Performance Bikes. Great comparison between an '00 Bird with a full Akro system and 146 bhp, and an '08 Busa and a 08 Kwak zzr 1400, and a Suzi gsx r1000. Great reading. I've added this to the articles from '02 till '09 concerning the Bird. All from Brit mags.

How about a group buy for a full set of fairings, Heisti? I'd pay you $500 for them in carbon.
