| Yep, It's FI light time again!!
My 2004 BB is displaying the tell-tale FI gremlin! About 4 months ago I had the light flicker, to which cleaning up the plug and taping it up solved. But came back about a month ago, no flicker just solid light on ignition on, cut out the engine a few times leaving me stuck and after leaving it a while went out and was back running. Has been fine for a month and now i've got a little flicker when i select my left indicator as of yesterday! Now, here's the interesting part, One of the things it did was when i turned off my datatool alarm, the rear light flashed with the front indicators instead of the rear indicators???? The infamous connector seems a likely culpit! Has anyone here had the FI issue on a later model BB (say 2003 on)? And has anyone ever come across the rear light/indicator glitch? I'm going to do the full solder fix of the connector but I'd love to here anyones theories/ideas!! Thanks in advance guys & gals, Seán.

Hi there - some time ago I found a post that deals with your problem and I'm reproducing it below. My sincere apologies to the original poster - I cannot for the life of me find the original copy and so I cannot credit the person who wrote it. I'm sorry. Anyway, I hope it helps you. Actually, my FI light has been coming on sometimes, but the bike does not cut out. Just before Christmas I rode 400 miles to another city and the light was on all the time. It was raining for most of the trip, but just a few days earlier I had cleaned out the contacts and taped it back really tight. Five days later, on the way back, the weather was very warm and dry and the light never came on. Two days in an underground garage and then I rode out - sunny and warm day - the light came on within five minutes. The bike missed constantly under hard acceleration, nearly cutting out - I stopped three times and turned it off for a few minutes each time to let it rest - after the third time the light never came back on - I rode fifty miles this time - and the bike pulled cleanly all the way to 10 thou revs. Next weekend I'll check the contacts again. This stuff is driving me crazy! ""ANOTHER AREA FOR LOOM PROBLEMS 99- 1. Below the tank there are TWO main cable blocks which are covered by one plastic cover. These have a direct link to the rear indicators and FUEL pump relay (ie Birds cutting Out). 2. When a power commander was fitted to sort out the HIGH petrol consumption of my 02 Bird (black) , upon leaving I noticed the rear LHS indicator was not working. Stopping the bike and checked the bulb - no, set the alarm - bulb worked! Returned to powercommander installer eventually found that wiggling the said two connectors reset the fuel pump relay and made the indicator work at the LHS. The TWO blocks were split apart and the same problem that is found in the rear 'Honda Test Block' - FI light issue had occurred - corrosion in the blocks. 3. Both connectors were scrapped and cleaned and problem resolved 4. The bike has only covered 9k and the 'Honda Test Block' - FI light issue rear block was stripped and the same problem was found. Stripped and cleaned now OK. 5. The newer blocks are different to the earlier inj as the joining strip comes away separately from the connecting block (easier to clean) as the older inj had two separate plugs which seized themselves together. I know the article is a bit long but hopefully it may point to an area to investigate before taking drastic steps. The only area I can assume it may have been caused by is possible power washing the area under the tank. My boyfriend has a 2000 inj with 8k and the connectors under the tank were OK but had to cut the rear 'Honda Test Block' out because it was so corroded!"" |

...the malfunction data memory can probably have some kind of data...use the service manual procedure to erase the malfuction data memory and then see if the fi light flashes again..

Yeah covered that bullet, so it's not a PGM-FI regonised problem! Took it apart today and it was pretty gunked up. The 04 models have 10 wires in the block, all interconnected using a single copper plate with numerous spades. There are three heavy gauge (~3mm copper), two medium (~2mm) and five small gauge (~1mm) wires connected by the plate within the block. Goes to show that although the later models seem to be better at avoid this problem it's still a possible weakness. Stripped the connector and solder ed everything together, then heat shrinked the lot and filled it with silcon grease!! Interestingly, i tested the soldered connection with a multimeter and it's positive with the ignition off and negative when the ignition/engine on. Hopefully, this will be the end of it now!!! Sean I also have a 2004 Blackbird and have also performed the wiring loom fix to no avail. I have pulled apart all the connectors i can find in the circuit that lead to the FI system. The symtoms are that the bike will turn over but not start. The fuel pump can not be heard. Which points to the fuel cut off relay not being connected. I have the circuit diagrams. When the circuit is followed the whole of the fuel pump circuit covers the fuel cut off and the engine stop relay and the tilt sensor relay. It also incorperates the side stand the clutch switch and the gear sensor. The thing I overlooked for a while was also the immobiliser sensor on the ingition switch. This is the point I am at now. I arrived here due to being able to manipulate the ignition switch a couple of time and the fuel pump comes to life and the FI light goes out. Bingo the bike will run. I am still not absolutely sure yet but I think it is the immobiliser pick up. I cant get to the four wires that come from the immobiliser pickup as they have a sealed plug about 4 inches from the ignition switch. I dont know if the immobiliser can be bypassed as the wires feed straight to the ECU. I hope this helps with some additional ideas. I know every time someone mentions the FI light everyone points to the wiring loom fix. Which I did at the start but it didnt fix my problem. Regards Murray

Sean, Like I said in message my problem seemed to stem from the Datatool. The earth wire being nicked when it was fitted. Sounds like the loom was virtually stripped b4 they spotted it. My 10 wire block ws spotless. The wires too. Still hard wired it bcoz nothin was workin. Ears are open. It's now become a pet hate of mine. Good luck mate. Keep us posted. |
