installed chinese knock of Digi gear indicator, bounces around now

Hey guys, as the title says. I wish I could say for sure it's causing it but this problem had occurred a few times over the years before it was installed. Nonetheless, it happens all the time now so let's assume it's the new item.

So, in short, typically at freeway speeds my digital speedo bounces around. 10 high, five low etc. And the other day I saw something for the first time: when I started the bike the coolant temp said "C" but was showing F numbers.

Anyway, there's a wire that gets the signals from the speedometer wire.

What can I do? IIRC, diodes are one way? Should I just tap one in?

I'm pretty sure it's not the overall electrical system: I'll paste what I had said in another thread:

Okay, for this morning's commute I set my radar detector to display voltage. It was in the mid to low 12's at idle and 13.8 volts at freeway speeds, about 4800 RPM. I'm guessing that's not it. I'd suggest that it's my Digi gear indicator but his had happened a few times before it.

I should also mention that on Tuesday, during my ride my tach was sitting at zero. Turned off the ignition while rolling, turned back on and it was fine after that.

Your battery voltages look a little low but that could be related to where you connected the radar detector.

Per the service manual you should check the following.
    1) Bike off resting voltage fully charged should be 13.0 - 13.2V (under charged <12.3V)
    2) Testing charging system (fully warmed up, Hi-beam ON) voltage should be between the voltage from step 1 above and 15.5V @5000 rpm.

If all checks out then maybe you have a ground issue somewhere.

    Good luck

It is indeed 13.2 sitting, but I also have a Li-Po battery so not sure how useful that is. You're saying 13.8 (I think it even was up at 14.2) while at freeway speeds is low? Like, the dash cluster needs that much more than 12 volts to function properly?

Or maybe that's not the point? Honda really says it should be putting out 15.5v at 5000 RPM? Where do I measure that, at the battery terminals?

I was sure it was some interaction with the gear indicator being connected to the speedo pulse wire, but it's just a guess.

If you are using Li-Po never mind the service manual checks.

Which wire exactly are you connected to (color)?

I am about to put a voltmeter on. Where is thh best place to connect the wires up?

Man I'll never be able to remember that. I'm pretty sure it would be the right one since it works, right? Sorry I can't be more helpful than that.

I found 2 years back that the first sign of Reg/Rect failure was the speedometer going to zero, then coming back on and bouncing..... I did not know at that time that this was an indicator of bad things happening, but after the bike breaking down 800 miles from home and the subsequent replacement of the RR, Battery and stator - you better believe I sure pay attention to such things now. Your voltage seems to be on the low side IMHO.
    Good luck.

Dave I am seeing 14.5 with the older Shendin MOSFET R/R and a Shoria lithium iron battery. I would run through this check and see if anything is off.

XX the best place to tie in the meter is at the battery terminals themselves it will give the most accurate reading of the systems input to the battery.

Thanks Bees! That will make it simple. I hooked up my heated jacket liner for the first time. Very nice and I wondered why did I not get it sooner. Coming home I thought that with that load on when I was slowing down to turn on a different road the head light looked like it was dimming a little then getting brighter. Had the jacket on low. No problem at speed.

Dave just caught the beginning of your post. I'd pull the gear indicator hookups and see if everything settles out. The last thing you want is the system backfeeding voltages into the ECM. It is very intolerate of that condition and will kill the drivers very quickly

Finally got around to looking at that chart. Looks great. Hopefully I can do it this weekend - I've got TWO cars I HAVE to get fixed this week first.

Just saw your most recent post. Can't I just throw a diode on the speedo and and RPM wires? It's a bitch to keep digging around in the nose cone area. Attached is the wires used.

Brian, one other clue: it doesn't affect the cruise control at all. Does that help?

Dave, no the diode may make it worse. You may have to isolate the signal if the aftermarket indicator is loading down the pulse enough. The cruise has a lower threshold than the factory speedo. Unplug it first and see if your issue goes away then you'll know where to go next.

Crikey, I got a speedo healer in there, the cruise AND a gear indicator. Actually, if I described how much electronic shit is now on there.... ugh.

Brian, in light of the upcoming trip and you saying my voltage looks like (IIRC 13.9 or so at freeway speeds) should I be looking into the R/R (or stator?)? Not sure which one but I know you know
