| Reg/Rec Replacement Question
Hi Guys, I flattened the battery on my '98 bird on Saturday, and as the batt was only 2 rides old, went through the checklist and have determined that the R/R has failed me. I certainly won't be replacing it with a genuine Honda part, but nobody locally can source an aftermarket item. A local wrecker has offered an '05 Yamaha R6 R/R, what I need to know is: a) Will the R6 R/R be up to the job and b) As the R6 has a somewhat more sophisticated electrical system eg EFI will the R/R wire straight in, or will it have additional output leads or other differences to older R1 R/Rs. Any help with either of these issues would be great, Cheers A

I dunno much about the R6 ones. I bought an Electrosport model, seems well made and has cooling fins unlike my original one, was $100 usd. however I bought it for an emergency spare and have not used it. Jaws sells some good ones too.

Jaws sells probably the best R/R available anywhere but the Price is also the highest anywhere. The dollar to pound conversion kills us right now!

| Re: Reg/Rec Replacement Question
Okay now have an aftermarket reg/rec from JAWS and should be good to go! For the record, the symptoms my blackbird showed were not the same as most others who have experienced reg/rec failures. The first sign that anything was wrong was the battery refusing to hold a charge. Voltage across the batt while running was low (13.5V ish) but not real low. Replaced the battery, then found that new battery showed signs of flattening after about 250km. If I charged it up and didn't use the headlight I could go ages without it going flat, but riding without lights is not well recommended. At this point voltage across the battery while running was down to about 12.8V. Running the full gamut of tests revealed stator was working OK but reg/rec failed on one diode test. The aftermarket reg/rec shows 14.5V across the battery, so fingers crossed I have found the problem.

Yamaha rec's look very similar to the updated finned versions of carb'd Birds rec's .. yzf ones etc .... is it a straight swap or wires need altering? .... Just asking cos they are half the price of honda ones ....

| Re: Reg/Rec Replacement Question Does anybody have a contact for the XX owner who was selling an adapter plug kit to run the Yamaha R1 r/r? He offered it as a complete ready to splice wired plug, or do-it-yourself parts.

Just to add to the thread- there's an eBay seller RMstatorINC who is currently offering r/r's for $39.95 each new, but listed as for '97/98 years. If they're good units, that's an unbeatable price. Anybody bought one? HONDA CBR1100XX Blackbird, 97-98 regulator/Rectifier:eBay Motors (item 290326092930 end time Jun-27-09 05:15:10 PDT) |

Jaws is fantastic to deal with but if you ever have a stator fail, you can get it rewound to a higher spec a bit cheaper than Jaws at Ken Cairns Auto Electrical in Hamilton. They did a lovely job on mine. Apparently, that's where all the NZ Honda dealers sent failed stators for repair. Cheers, Geoff
