| Exhaust staining....
My exhausts, just under and behind the riders pegs, are starting to get some light brown staining. Has anyone else had this problem?? Any ideas how to get rid of it?? I polish them regularly and the rest of the exhaust is spotless and like a mirror, except these spots. Thanks. | |

Standard (esp with cats in the headers). Stainless will change colour if it gets hot enough - straw colour means at around 200deg. Dont know how to get rid of it. It is bad enough trying to clean the melted boot sole from around the centerstand.

Using Autosol metal polish will get rid of it .................................................. .................. But it'll be back ![]() Used to do it every weekend, but have given in and lived with the nickel colour (Nutter said the same thing once)

Titanium doesn't do that.

The stain is caused by heat coming through the pipe. Basically it is burning from the inside. There are lots of products, but they just polish the outside. The heat is coming through the inside, therefore no permanent cure. Maybe ceramic coating on the inside, and watching the lean mixture. (This generates more heat). Cruisers solve the problem with chrome heat shields outside the stained pipes. I put some heat shields on the pipes when I lowered the pegs to prevent the melted boot stains on the pipes. |

Yep, that is heat colouring from the temp of the cats. "Light Straw" colour in stainless steel is about 239C. Just like the multi coloured headers you used to see on bikes with chromed header pipes where it went through the range of colours, but "only" up to 239C here. It is why I took them off & put non cat pipes on.
