Agreed 100%, I've been seeing some really frightening 'footage'. Coming from such a small island the scale of the flooding is proving difficult to understand.

Yeah the scenes are pretty devastating and they say there is more to come. We are not affected so much in my neck of the woods but I know my thoughts are with those having to deal with it first hand.

Lets see if we can put a little perspective on this

This shows some of the area that is flooded.. Note I typed some.

Toowoomba to brisbane is 124 klm

This image show the approximate equal amount of area of london that would be flooded.

The area that is affected by flooding is quoted in the media here as being equal to France and Germany combined which is perhaps related to your 'some'.

My post was based on the information i was able to get from google.. there is alot of information being passed around but essentially no details..

Another post i found said that almost 2/3 of queensland is affected. Now if you look up a map of australia you will find that England fits into Victoria 3 times and Victoria is the smallest of the states..

    Re: Land Down Under

I'm in the south of Brisbane well away from the river and there is some scary stuff happening to the north about 30k away. We have had 6 weeks of heavy rain but today is sunny.

With the release of water from the dam it is estimated that 40,000 homes will be flooded by 4 am in the morning. The dam is at 190% and needs to be bought down to a safe level. Piss poor planning by our government but thats another story.

Queensland is a big place but I just heard on the news that 750,000 properties are affected in the State.

Make me feel grateful that we are OK and feel for the survivors and the relatives of those that were lost.

Stayed home from work as driving around is just to dangerous and we all decided to close up for the day.

Ps the area in Queensland affected by the floods is approx 2000k north south by 800k east west. It is now spreading further south by another 3to 400k.

    Re: Land Down Under

Actually the Govt at the time did the right thing,
The wavenhoe dam built in the late 70's stopped Brisbane from going under nearly every year
Before that dam was built, central Brisbane was inundated every wet season.
I lived there in 71 72 73. 73 in Maryborough when it got a direct hit with a cyclone,, 74 in Mt Isa, QLD was just a big ocean in all these years, The worst being 74,
Its just that the dam is totally inundated this time round,
If it wasnt for that dam, Brisbane would not be there now, Its holding back a lot of water,
If ya not boppin, Ya in ya coffin. Rock and roll will soothe your soul.
Mods, 6mm Shim, 12 inch risers, Double bubble Windsceen, Homemade Ventura type packrack, Expandable to 82 litre, Rjays rack bag, Lowered rear end frame by 3 inches. Suspension is still stock, home made Cans, awesome.

    Re: Land Down Under

Your right deadman, the dam was never intended however as a water supply for the South East. It is totally unsuitable for that purpose as it is shallow and has huge evaporative losses. It was put there to protect Brisbane. Sadly that is not what it is being used for.

With the influx of interstate migrants to QLD the Government should have put in the infrastructure to cope with them. They did not and that was why we almost ran out of water last year.

When the dam filled to 100% late last year it should have been emptied down to at least 50% to allow a safety buffer for this very situation. Unfortunately the Govt saw it as the answer to their problems and 40,000 houses will be the cost in the morning.
